Mexico announces women’s team for Rio 2016

After a three days of selection events at the Mexican Olympic Committee sports centre in Mexico City, Aida, Alejandra and Gabriela were officially announced as the recurve women’s archery team for Rio 2016 on 27 May.

"These athletes will go to the Olympic Games and to the Archery World Cup in Turkey to continue with the work that, we hope, will help us arrive in Rio with a good level," said Lee Wong, Mexican head coach, to the local media.

Aida and Alejandra both competed at London 2012, where Aida finished with a silver medal. Rio will be Gabriela’s first appearance at the Games.

“I feel really happy to be part of this team,” said Gabriela. “It is a really good team and I will give all my best in Rio. We’ll show what we, the Mexicans, are made of.”

Mexico qualified a full team quota place in the women’s competition during the World Archery Championships in Copenhagen in 2015, and secured one individual space in the men’s event during the Americas continental qualifying in Medellin, Colombia this May.

Ernesto Boardman qualified the men’s quota place and will attend Rio as the lone man, unless he, three-time Olympian Juan Rene Serrano and Oldair Zamora can upgrade to a full team spot at the final world qualifier held as part of the Hyundai Archery world Cup stage in Antalya.

In 2012, the Mexican men finished fourth at the London Olympics, losing 224-219 to Korea in the bronze medal match.

Toronto 2015 Pan-American Games Champion Luis “El Abuelo” Alvarez and Karla Hinojosa are the alternates.
