Executive board awards 2023 World Archery Championships to Berlin

The executive board of World Archery appointed hosts for major events over the next four years at its meeting prior to World Archery Congress on 31 May 2019 in ’s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.

Berlin, Germany was awarded the 2023 World Archery Championships and Pilsen, Czech Republic was awarded the 2023 World Archery Para Championships.

The events will act as the main qualification tournaments for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“Appointing strong hosts for key events in the next Olympic cycle positions archery to take advantage of the first Summer Games in Europe since London,” said World Archery President Prof Dr Ugur Erdener.

“We are confident that Berlin, which has hosted a stage of the World Cup since 2017, will deliver a world championships of exceptional quality.”

“The commitment of Paris as a stage of the Hyundai Archery World Cup in the lead up to the Olympic Games in 2024 gives us an opportunity to build expertise, experience and audience in France – and will be beneficial for both our events and archery at the Games.”

Paris, France (2021-2023); Shanghai, China (2020-2024); and Guatemala City (2020) have been named as stages of the Hyundai Archery World Cup. 

Next year’s stage of the international circuit is now confirmed to consist of three legs in Shanghai, Guatemala City and Berlin – plus the Hyundai Archery World Cup Final in a city yet to be confirmed.

A tournament in Sydney, Australia at 250 level will be added to the Indoor Archery World Series calendar this winter.

The 2021 World Archery 3D Championships have been awarded to Terni, Italy.

The host cities of the outdoor, para and youth world championships in 2021 are yet to be announced. However, expressions of interest have been received and their appointment is pending submission of final bid books.

Barcelona 1992 Olympic Champion Sebastien Flute’s appointment as the technical delegate for Tokyo 2020 was also approved, along with the restructuring of the event department following the departure of Chris Marsh later this summer. 

A number of editorial bylaws were also passed.

The 53rd World Archery Congress takes place on 1-2 June 2019, ahead of the World Archery Para Championships on 3-9 June and Hyundai World Archery Championships on 10-16 June.
