Copenhagen announces finals venue for 2015 worlds

Christiansborg Palace, home of the Danish Parliament, will play host to the 2015 World Archery Championships in Copenhagen. Five hundred of the world’s best archers will compete, including defending recurve women’s world champion and Denmark’s sportsperson of the year in 2013 Maja JAGER.

“When we held the 2009 World Cup Final in Nyhavn harbour, we received a lot of international acknowledgement and set new standards for hosting elite archery events,” said World Archery Denmark chairman Rolf LIND.

“We hope to create an equally-iconic set-up by selecting Christiansborg Palace for the 2015 World Archery Championships finals. Our goal is to show the best of the sport to the whole world. We’d like to combine this with displaying the best of Demark to the world, by placing the finals in the heart of Copenhagen.”

Maja JAGER, who won the world title after a tense one-arrow shoot-off in Belek/Antalya at the end of 2013, is excited to defend her title in her home country: “Copenhagen will be a fantastic host city and I’m happy my international peers will get to see it. I’m sure it will be a fantastic setting for the finals.”

Having hosted several large sporting events in the past few years, Christiansborg Palace is no stranger to the sports media spotlight. As well as the KMD Ironman Copenhagen and Christianborg Swim Meet, it was the centre of the recent IAAF world half marathon.

“There’s a natural focus on an event in the heart of Copenhagen, in such beautiful surroundings,” said Lars LUNDOV, CEO of Sport Event Denmark.

The World Archery Championships in Copenhagen will be the first opportunity for athletes and teams to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
