Vote for Eleonora Sarti as IPC Athlete of the Month

On 4 June 2016, Eleonora Sarti beat the previous para archery ranking round world record mark by seven points.

The Italian is the world number one para archer in the compound women’s open rankings, and the reigning World Archery Para Champion from 2015.

The public has until Wednesday 8 July 2016 to vote for their Allianz Athlete of the Month for June 2016.

Eleonora added the world record in the ranking round to her list of achievements at the Italian National Para Archery Championships in Padova – when she scored 695 out of a possible 720 points during qualification, despite less-than-perfect weather conditions.

The score beat the previous best mark, set by Great Britain’s Danielle Brown in 2013, by seven points – and tied the Italian national able-bodied and open record, held by Marcella Tonioli.

In March this year, Sarti was called up to the national able-bodied for the world indoors held in Ankara, Turkey, where she won bronze in the compound women’s team event.

Competing in Ankara for the international first team was a huge milestone as only the second Paralympic female athlete to shoot on both para and able-bodied squads in Italy after Paola Fantato participated in both the 1996 Olympics and Paralympics.

Sarti finished fourth at the European Para Championships one month later, but won continental mixed team silver at the event.

She is one of the para archers already confirmed for the Paralympic Games in Rio.

“I’m looking forward to having the chance to display this level in Rio. It will be my first time at the Paralympics and a dream I’ve had since starting to shoot, and leaving the national Paralympic basketball team, come true.”

Eleonora made her international debut the very first year she started archery in 2013.

The nominations for the Allianz Athlete of the Month are compiled from submissions by National Paralympic Committees and International Federations.
