USA compound teams strong in worlds warm-up

The top-ranked USA compound men’s team shot matches of 231 and twice 233 to defeat Switzerland, Mexico and India, while the second-seeded women – who had a bye into the quarterfinals – beat Russia and South Africa, ensuring both squads would have a shot at gold medals in Berlin.

Both line-ups will next compete at the World Archery Championships in Mexico City.

“We have a good team,” said Steve Anderson. “For the world championships we’ll have Kris Schaff, Braden Gellenthien and myself. In the US we have so many talented shooters that no matter how we plug in we can be competitive with anybody. We feel good about it.”

Schaff, who climbed the mixed team podium at the World Games and won the US open just before Berlin, made his World Archery debut in 2017.

Reo Wilde, who has been a regular on the squad, came fourth in selections and will not travel to Mexico City.

Paige Gore, Lexi Keller and Cassidy Cox, none of whom are older than 22, guaranteed the USA compound women’s team its best finish of the season by making the final.

“We’ve been preparing for a long time, we have all shot with each other since we’re young, so the dynamic is really good,” said Gore.

The fourth stage of the 2017 Hyundai Archery World Cup runs 8 to 13 August in Berlin, Germany.
