Frederick to leave role as Chilean head coach

After a successful six-year stint as head coach of the Chilean national archery team, German-born Martin Frederick has announced he will step down from the role to pursue “new challenges”.

“I’ve had a marvellous six years in this lovely country and I can look back on both a successful and interesting time here,” said Frederick, who helped Denisse van Lamoen win a world title in 2011, his first year in charge. 

“I’ll now take some time to think about my future, in all directions, and in archery, of course.”

As well as leading a national training squad, Frederick’s role has included implementing coaching structures across the country, optimising education and approach, and coordinating coaching staff within the country. He’s watched the improved teamwork result in a new generation of increasingly strong, young archers emerging in Chile.

Most recently, at Rio 2016, Frederick guided a then-16-year-old Ricardo Soto to a top-10 finish in his Olympic debut.

Frederick’s departure leaves the national head coach position vacant in Chile and the federation has already issued calls for eligible candidates as it searches for a replacement.
