Turkish W1 men “royalty” after team win in Beijing

Turkey took gold in the W1 men’s team event, with some incredible shooting from Omer Asik – in the final to take the title by three points over Russia, 205-202, at the 2017 World Archery Para Championships in Beijing, China.

“I am so excited. I don’t know what to do. Our team trusted each other, and we won. This was my first time wearing the national team shirt and I feel so proud,” said an ecstatic Yiğit Caner Aydin afterwards.

The Turkish team, who smashed the ranking round world record in qualifying earlier in the week, were tied with Russia going into the fourth end – but dropped nothing out of the gold rings in the last to wrap up the match in style.

“I would say we are royalty,” added Aydin.

Italy beat Korea by four points for the bronze medal.

There was no W1 women’s team event in Beijing due to the number of entries not meeting the minimum requirement for a world championship title.

(A reminder: W1 athletes usually have impairment in both the top and bottom halves of their bodies. They can use recurve or compound bows; all athletes in these finals used compound bows. Compounds are limited to 45lbs in draw weight and cannot use magnifying scopes or peep sights.)

The 2017 World Archery Para Championships run 12-17 September in Beijing, China.
