Korean compound team returns 2 world champions in 2018

Korea’s incumbent eight-athlete compound squad – four men and four women – successfully saw off challengers to return unchanged for the 2018 season following the last selection tournament in Yecheon, Korea on 4 April.

The women’s team retains reigning World Archery Champion Song Yun Soo and 2015 worlds winner Kim Yunhee, along with So Chaewon and Choi Bomin. Song, who finished third in the selection ranking, received bonus points due to her current world title – although would have made the top-four team without it.

Kim Jongho, Choi Yonghee, Hong Sung Ho and Kim Taeyoon remain the men’s side.

Compound women

(Ranked by final order in selection tournament.)

1. So Chaewon – Scored highest international ranking round of all compound women in 2017 with 709/720.

2. Choi Bomin – Former world team champion as a recurve archer. Reigning compound winner of the Asian Games.

3. Song Yun Soo – Korea’s second compound women’s World Archery Champion from Mexico City in 2017.

4. Kim Yunhee – Korea’s first compound women’s World Archery Champion from Copenhagen in 2015.

Eliminated: Oh Yoo Hyun, Oh Ji-Eun, Lee Yejin, Lee Hyerim

Compound men

(Ranked by final order in selection tournament.)

1. Kim Jongho – Two-time compound mixed team World archery Champion, two-time compound Universiade Champion.

2. Choi Yonghee – Scored Korea’s first compound international win with gold at the Hyundai Archery World Cup stage in Antalya back in 2014.

3. Hong Sung Ho – 20 years of age and shooting in his second international season in 2018.

4. Kim Taeyoon – silver medallist at the Universiade in Gwangju in 2015, fourth in 2017.

Eliminated: Yang Yongho, Yang Jaewon, Min Lihong, Kim Kwang Sub 

The Korean recurve line-up for the first stage of the Hyundai Archery World Cup in Shanghai is expected to be announced on 16 April; Kim Woojin and Lee Eun-Gyeong lead selection with one phase to go.
