Hosts prevent Korean sweep at 3rd Asia Cup in Chinese Taipei

Chinese Taipei’s recurve women’s team and individual compound woman Wu Ting-Ting prevented Korea sweeping the gold medals at stage three of the 2018 Asia Cup in Taipei City, Chinese Taipei.

The tournament was due to finish on Thursday 12 July but had to be cut short. The entire schedule was completed in just two days, on 9-10 July, to avoid incoming typhoon Maria.

Chinese Taipei’s recurve women’s team beat Korea, 5-3, on the second morning of competition.

“We are only high school students and the Korean team is strong, but we didn’t think about it,” said the young women – Kao Chia-Ping, Su Szu-Ping and Yeh Yu-Chen. “We just stayed calm and tried to enjoy the match, focusing on the target. We’re very happy.”

Neither of the teams fielded the same squads that will compete against each other at the all-important Asian Games in Jakarta later in the summer, as those athletes are travelling to stage four of the 2018 Hyundai Archery World Cup in Berlin, Germany.

Compound women’s winner Wu upset top seed So Chaewon, who finished third, in the semifinals and then beat Indian archer Divya Dhayal, 144-141, in the final.

“Honestly I was a little bit nervous. But my coach told me to take it easy and trust myself,” said Wu, who also had to survive a double shoot-off in the quarters: “It was my first time shooting two straight Xs.”

Korea’s world number five Kim Jongho, who also won the first stage of the Hyundai Archery World Cup season in Shanghai to qualify for the final in Samsun, Kim Kyu-Chan, and Rio 2016 Olympian Choi Misun were the other individual winners in Taipei City.

The third stage of the 2018 Asia Cup took place on 9 to 10 July in Taipei City, Chinese Taipei.
