Schloesser tops qualifying for 3rd time in 2018

The Netherland’s Mike Schloesser scored 713 points out of a possible 720 for the 72-arrow 50-metre ranking round to lead the compound men’s ranking round in Berlin and for the third time this Hyundai Archery World Cup season.

“Shots felt good. It was really tough conditions, especially the second half, but I’m super happy with my shots. All my nines were, like, just out,” said Schloesser.

“There was definitely more in it when the weather was still good but for the conditions that we had today it was the best score I could get.”

In Shanghai and Antalya, the other two stages at which he competed, he shot 710 and 713 points, respectively. At both those events, he was tied with two other archers in the lead.

In Berlin, he finished with a clear lead, two points up on the USA’s Kris Schaff in second. Abhishek Verma of India was third with 709 points.

Verma shot five perfect ends to start the round and led at the halfway point.

“After you shoot five perfect 60s, you know it’s time to create a world record. There’s a lot of pressure. My first nine was just outside the 10 ring, but it’s not a bad score,” he said.

Schloesser is already qualified for the Samsun 2018 Hyundai Archery World Cup Final after winning stage two of the international tour in Antalya.

“It doesn’t matter what competition it is or if you have a spot secured yet, you always want to win. Maybe a little bit less pressure, because normally the last tournament has a lot – but it’s still a World Cup and still an important tournament,” he said.

Schloesser and Jody Vermeulen’s 1410-point mixed team ranking round will be ratified as a new world record. Mixed team qualification records were introduced ahead of the tournament in Berlin.

Demir Elmaagacli, Stephan Hansen, Domagoj Buden, Pierre-Julien Deloche and Martin Damsbo rounded out the list of the compound men who will receive a top-eight bye into the third round of eliminations.

Dambso beat Lin Che-Wei and Braden Gellenthien in a shoot-off to take the eighth seed.

The fourth stage of the 2018 Hyundai Archery World Cup takes place in Berlin, Germany on 16 to 22 July.
