Review of the afternoon's eliminations matches

Read the review of all matches below.   Men – 1/32 Eliminations   Elias MALAVE (VEN/25) v KUO Cheng-Wei (TPE/40)   The 22-year old MALAVE qualified for London winning the final qualification tournament in June. His opponent in the first round won the mixed team event at the World Cup in Shanghai this year.   The Venezuelan made the best start with 29 points in the first set, leading 2-0. But with only 23 in the second, he let the second set go and the score was tied (2-2).   KUO took the lead by two set points (4-2) after he won the third set 28-26. The two athletes then went on shooting exactly the same set (9-9-10). The archer from Chinese Taipei kept his advantage (5-2) and was only one point away from victory.   After MALAVE scored 10-8-9 in the final set and KUO 9-10, the latter needed an 8 to tie the set and win the match. But he released a 6 which offered the set to his opponent and tied the match for a shoot-off!   What a thrilling ending! MALAVE achieved a 10 and put much pressure on his opponent. But KUO replied with a 10 also, even closer to the centre for victory!   Ahmed EL-NEMR (EGY/57) v Crispin DUENAS (CAN/8)   DUENAS was impressive in the ranking round, finishing 8th. He is taking part in his second Olympics after Beijing 2008 where he ranked 39th.   The Canadian started spectacularly. With 29 points in the first set, he two a 2-point lead, 2-0. Not impressed at all, his opponent from Egypt replied with even better shooting and a perfect end of 30 to draw the match at 2-2.   EL-NEMR went on with 28 points in the third set. To which DUENAS could not reply with 8-7-10 (25), leaving the lead go to his opponent (4-2). The Canadian started the next set with 8-7 again… which ruined all hopes for a recovery. The Egyptian won this set 26-24 and the match by 6-2. Big disappointment for DUENAS and great performance for EL-NEMR!   Juan Rene SERRANO (MEX/29) v Marco GALIAZZO (ITA/36)   The Mexican and the Italian met in 1/16 eliminations at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. GALIAZZO came out the winner of that match, but which was not competed in the set system. In Athens, the Italian went on winning the Olympic title, and he added another gold on Saturday in London in the team event after defeating the Mexican squad of SERRANO in semifinal.   The first two sets turned in favour of the Mexican who led 4-0. But his experienced opponent replied with a perfect third set (10-10-10) and came back at 2-4.   With a 7 at his second arrow in the fourth set, GALIAZZO left the door open to SERRANO, who did not let his chance go for revenge!     Md Emdadul Haque MILON (BAN/61) v Larry GODFREY (GBR/4)   The home favourite GODFREY qualified in 4th and is in good form but faces a tough start. A first-round victory over MILON is within his capabilities. But then he will face Juan Rene SERRANO (MEX), who was 4th at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and just defeated the 2004 Olympic champion and newly crowned from the team event in London Marco GALIAZZO (ITA).   As expected in this first round, the Briton took a straight set victory 6-0.     Men – 1/16 Eliminations   KUO Cheng-Wei (TPE/40) v Ahmed EL-NEMR (EGY/57)   After his incredible upset against the No. 8 seed Crispin DUENAS (CAN), the Egyptian competitor was certainly dreaming of even more in this Olympic competition…   The Egyptian won the first set 27-25 but lost the second one 25-28, and the match was tied, 2-2. Despite an excellent 27 third set, EL-NEMR could do nothing against KUO's perfect series: 10-10-10!   Confidence had turned to KUO's side, who clinched the fourth set and victory with 28, and end of the road for the Africa's representative!   Juan Rene SERRANO (MEX/29) v Larry GODFREY (GBR/4)   Great atmosphere at Lord's Cricket Ground for this match between the Mexican SERRANO and the crowd's favourite GODFREY! The two archers faced each other in May this year at the World Cup in Turkey with a 7-3 win for the Briton.   SERRANO and GODFREY had a difficult start each, but the local won the first set 26-25 and led 2-0. They both shot almost perfectly in the second, 29 each, and the advantage remained British, 3-1.   GODREY made a big step forward towards victory in the fourth set when he clinched it 27-26 (5-1). SERRANO put lots of pressure in the final set with 28 points. As GODREY scored 9 and 10, he needed another 9 at least to win the match… Perfect final shot and the grandstands exulted!   Women – 1/32 Eliminations   Carina CHRISTIANSEN (DEN/7) v Elisa BARNARD (AUS/58)   The Dane shot a national record of 663 in the ranking round on Friday and is seeded No. 7. However, CHRISTIANSEN lost the first set of her first match against the Australian BARNARD.   She returned the situation however (2-2), winning the second set 24-21, as she took advantage of a 6 by her opponent to open the set. The third set was a draw 24-24 and the match remained a tie, 3-3.   As BARNARD could not do better than 23 points, CHRISTIANSEN took the lead for the first time of the match with 25 points (5-3). She then ended with 27, against 21 only for her contender, and clinched victory 7-3.   LE Chien-Ying (TPE/39) v Begul LOKLUOGLU (TUR/26)   Though the lowest ranked archer in the match, the lady from Chinese Taipei won the first two sets, 28-26 and 26-23, and led 4-0.   With 29 points in the third set, LOKLUOGLU may have thought she had made enough to stay in the match. It was not counting on three perfect shots by her opponent LE, who clinched a straightforward surprising victory 6-0!   TAN Ya-Ting (TPE/3) v Nathalie DIELEN (SUI/62)   The 18-year old archer from Chinese Taipei won the silver medal at the Youth Olympic Games in 2010 and the team silver and mixed team bronze at the junior world championships last year. This season she won the mixed team event at the Shanghai World Cup.   Her opponent from Switzerland takes part in her second Games after Beijing 2008.   The two ladies scored 26 in the first set, and TAN repeated the same score in the second. DIELEN let it go to her opponent shooting 25 points and trailed 1-3 after two sets. The two set points advantage remained on Chinese Taipei's side after the two archers shot 25 points each in the third set (4-2).   DIELEN drove the No. 3 seed into a corner, winning the fourth set 27-24. The match was undecided with one set to go. TAN honoured her rank though, shooting a close-to-perfect final series with 10-9-10, leaving no chance to her opponent.   Maja JAGER (DEN/35) v Elena RICHTER (GER/30)   The two athletes faced each other twice in 2011 World Cup events. The Dane won 7-3 in Croatia, while the German took revenge on the same score in Turkey one month later.   RICHTER suffered from a bad second arrow, a 5, and lost the first set 21-26 (0-2). She then trailed 0-4, shooting 25 against 28 for JAGER in the second set.   It was RICHTER's turn to score a strong 28 series and win the third set to come back at 2-4. The German then took advantage of a 24-point set by JAGER to tie the match, 4-4.   The Dane had an opportunity to clinch victory in the final set after her opponent shot 9-8-9 and she had 9-9 on the score board. She needed a 9 to win but hit the 8-ring: shoot-off!   The tie-break arrow was a 9 for the German and an 8 only for the Dane. Great comeback in this match and victory for RICHTER!   Women – 1/16 Eliminations   Carina CHRISTIANSEN (DEN/7) v LE Chien-Ying (TPE/39)   The advantage of the rank goes to the Dane in this match, but the afternoon has already created a certain number of upsets, however…   After a draw in the first set (26-26), CHRISTIANSEN took the lead 3-1 as both archers improved their scores in the second set (28-27).   It was LE's turn to score 28 in the third set, to which her opponent could only reply with 26. Draw again: 3-3! Fantastic shooting in the fourth end, each lady shooting two 10s and a 9, and the match remained tied: 4-4!   CHRISTIANSEN scored 10-8-9 in the final set. With 9-9, her contender from Chinese Taipei needed a 10 to win or a 9 to tie. Very bad last shot for LE, a 6, and victory for CHRISTIANSEN!   TAN Ya-Ting (TPE/3) v Elena RICHTER (GER/30)   The Youth Olympic silver medallist from Chinese Taipei was favourite of the final match of the day. She scored one more point than her opponent in each of the first two sets (27-26 and 28-27) and led 4-0.   RICHTER stayed in the match, winning the third set 27-25 (2-4). In her previous match, the German had recovered from a 0-4 score to come back and win. However, this time 26 in the fourth set were not enough TAN's 27, and the 18 years old from Chinese Taipei won her second match of the day and will shoot in the 1/8 round on Thursday.   World Archery Communication
