Athlete of the Week: Luis ALVAREZ (MEX)

Luis ALVAREZ, who is celebrating his 22nd birthday on 13 April, has made a name for himself over the last twelve months. The archer from Baja California participated in his first world-class events in 2012, and burst on the world scene with an individual victory at the World Cup stage 3 in Ogden.

ALVAREZ was selected to represent Mexico at the London Olympic Games later that summer. A strong Mexican team upset the No. 2 France in quarterfinals, but lost the next round to eventual gold medallists Italy, 215-217. They were outscored by No. 1 Korea in the bronze medal match and settled for fourth place.

ALVAREZ’ previous victory in Ogden earned him the eighth and final qualifying spot for the World Cup Final in September. In Tokyo, the Mexican faced the World No. 1 ELLISON in the first round, and was defeated 6-0 to finish eighth.

However, so far in 2013, ALVAREZ achieved the best outdoor results of any recurve archer from the Americas, winning the first two World Ranking events that were held on the continent. In March, he dominated the Mexican Grand Prix. In early April, he won the Arizona Cup, with a decisive victory over Brady ELLISON in the final set of the gold medal match.

These outstanding results allowed ALVAREZ to join the world’s top 10 athletes in his division. Currently ranked 8th, he’s the only archer from America among the top 10 recurve men besides ELLISON, and the only Latin American. Stay tuned for more performances from ALVAREZ this season!
