First major European outdoor tournament starts in Riom

The level of competition promises to be very high, with the participation of the best archers from the host country (except Berengere SCHUH) and several top archers from other European countries. As in every post-Olympic year, we will see many newcomers on the shooting line.

Recurve Archery

France can count on three young but experienced archers. World No. 11 Gael PREVOST (photo), who belongs to the local archery club of Riom, will be the huge crowd favourite. Only 19 years old, PREVOST, who won the bronze medal at the last World Cup Final, is a top contender to win the recurve men title. Thomas FAUCHERON (world No. 16 and European bronze medallist) and Thomas AUBERT (No. 18, world team silver medallist at Ulsan 2009) are also expected to shoot well on home soil. Meanwhile, Italy can count on young talents such as Massimiliano MANDIA and Alberto ZAGAMI. They will be challenged by more experienced archers such as three-time Olympian Larry GODFREY (GBR).

The women’s competition promises to be very tight, with participation of Russians Ksenia PEROVA (world No. 4) and Inna STEPANOVA, British Olympian Naomi FOLKARD (No. 14), Germany’s Karina WINTER (No. 26), and Ukraine’s Lidiia SICHENIKOVA, among other talents. France’s medal hopes lie on the shoulders of Cyrielle COTRY, bronze medallist at the last European Championships.

Compound Archery

The French men are expected to dominate the compound division, with participation of world No. 3 and No. 4 Dominique GENET and Pierre-Julien DELOCHE. Will athletes from other nations be able to stop them ?

The BUDEN family from Croatia will be present in full force in Riom with three members : world No. 16 Ivana, who is the current world field champion and European indoor champion, her younger brother Domagoj, as well as their father and coach Dubravko.
