Last year he finished 5th at the European Grand Pirx in Whyl before getting a good 4th place in Antalya, Turkey. It is now certain that he will do even better this year here, as he will be fighting for the gold this afternoon against Brazilian Roberval Dos Santos.   Roberto DOS SANTOS (BRA) The Brazilian archer is certainly one of the good surprises of the second stage of the 2006 Archery World Cup. Ranked 40th in the first event in Porec, Dos Santos was 7-seed after the qualification round here. After shooting an excellent 118 (out of a possible 120) in quarterfinal, he defeated the Swiss Patrizio Hofer on the shoot-off (10-9) after the two were tied at 117 after the regular 12 arrows of their semi-final. With this excellent result, he has gained the right to fight for gold today.   Compound Men – Gold Medal Match   Patrizio HOFER (SUI) The 2003 indoor bronze medalist has once more added a very good result to his quiver. After a great deception in Porec, where he was defeated in the 1/8 elimination round after ranking fourth in the qualification, Hofer could this time manage to go further in the competition. The Swiss archer, seed 3 here in Antalya, successively upset Uzmez (TUR), Torrijos (ESP), Lara (ES) and Zamanyejad (IRI) before losing in a very close match to Dos Santos (BRA): 117-117 / shoot-off 9-10. Hofer now hopes to add a bronze medal to his prize list.   Jorge JIMENEZ (ESA) The El Salvadorean archer seems to have become good friend with the Antalya Grand Prix. After a 6th place last year, he will even improved his ranking this year fighting for the bronze medal this afternoon. It is sure that he will then be eager to compete well at home as the World Cup will be passing through San Salvador in two weeks for now for the third stage.   Compound Women – Gold Medal Match   Anna KAZANTSEVA (RUS) The 34-year old Russian archer, leading the Compound Women World Cup ranking after her victory in Porec two weeks ago, will face her teammate Sofia Goncharova for gold. This afternoon, Kazantseva will be trying to gain a second title in a row in this first Archery World Cup series as well as reiterate her last year’s victory at the Antalya Grand Prix.   Sofia GONCHAROVA (RUS) For sure the 2005 World Champion will give a hard time to her compatriot in the gold final. The Russian archer, who just turned 25-year old on Wednesday, will for sure be willing to offer herself a Gold birthday present today. After losing to another East European lady Maja Marcen early in the competition in Porec, Goncharova had the opportunity to take revenge here in Antalya in the 1/8 round with a victory 113-110 over the Slovenian archer.   Compound Women – Bronze Medal Match   Oktyabrina BOLOTOVA (RUS) The third member of the Russian team that set a new World and European Record (230 for the 24-arrow match) in the team event yesterday will also be competing for a medal (bronze) today in the individual event. After an excellent run in this second World Cup Series, where she successively defeated Ochoa (MEX), Soemod (DEN) and Soy (IND), Bolotova had to bow before her teammate Goncharova (108-113) in the semi-finals. Antalya seems to be a place where she feels very comfortable, as she already finished 2nd of this Grand Prix last year.   Nichola SIMPSON (GBR) The British archer Nichola Simpson will try to prevent a 100% Russian podium in her bronze medal match against Bolotova. After ranking 7th in the qualifications, she faced Yurtsever (TUR), Willems (BEL), Hansdah (IND) to make her way to the semi-finals where she met Porec winner Kazantseva. The Russian proved to be insuperable for Simpson at that stage shooting an amazing 115 out of a possible 120. The British lady will then shoot for the bronze medal late this afternoon.   See also our biographies section!   Ludivine Maitre Wicki / Françoise Dagouret FITA Communication
