Elimination Day - The Road to the World Cup Final

The American Dave Cousins staying alive ! Today in Shanghai was probably the most exciting day of archery in the year. Not only, there were four places to grab for the medal matches of the Shanghai event. For many, there were also four spots towin forthe World Cup Final in Mexico next month. Here is a run through all the key matches of the day !

Compound Men 1/2 – Genêt Dominique (FRA) – Cousins Dave (USA) The fight for a place in the gold medal match here in Shanghai was tight between French Genêt and American Cousins, just before the night. Tied 113 to 113 after their 12 arrows, the one holding his nerves the best was Cousins shooting a 10 while Genêt scored a 9. Moreover, this justsaved Cousins chances for the World Cup Final. Compound Men 1/2 –Jimenez Jorge (ESA) – Sidi Neto Vitor (BRA) The second semi-final was opposing two South Americans: finally, the archer from El Salvador Jimenez easily took over Brazilian Sidi Neto on a score of 116-110. Reo Wilde (USA) and Jorge Jimenez (ESA) know they are going to the World Cup Final in Mexico. The last two qualifying places will be decided between Cousins (USA), Genêt (FRA) and Elzinga (NED), depending on the outcome of the matches on Saturday. Van Natta loses again to Goncharova ! Compound Women 1/2 – Van Natta Jamie (USA) – Goncharova Sofia (RUS) For the second time in this first ever World Cup, Van Natta has had to bow before Goncharova. After losing to the same Russian archer in the gold final in San Salvador, Van Natta lost again today in the semi-final on the score of 109 to 105. Compound Women 1/2 – Ochoa Linda (MEX) – Kazantseva Anna (RUS) Despite her qualifying for the gold medal match here in Shanghai over Kazantseva (108-105), Mexican Linda Ochoa has no more hope to replace her sister Almendrafront of her fans in the World Cup Final in one month from now. In this category, the qualified ladies for the Grand Final in Mexico are already known: it will be a Russian vs. American confrontation between Goncharova, Kazantseva, Davis and Van Natta. Reo Wilde and Jorge Jimenez qualified for the Grand Final ! Compound Men 1/4 – Hofer Patrizio (SUI) – Cousins Dave (USA) Hofer faced a big upset in his 1/4 final to Cousins… The Swiss archer knows exactly where he lost the one point he is missing at the end of the match (114-115): with a very bad first end (26 out of a possible 30), he was already behind by 3 points, since Cousins scored a 29 end. The American can still make it to the Grand Final, while Hofer has given up all chances. Compound Men 1/4 – Genêt Dominique (FRA) – Dos Santos Roberval (BRA) The French Genêt has left a great impression in his 1/4 final match. Facing Dos Santos, he scored an amazing 118 with his 12 arrows. With 112 points, the Brazilian could only bow in front of his opponent. Together with Cousins and Elzinga, Genêt still keeps a good opportunity to go to Mexico at the end of October. The four individual places for Mexico already decided in Compound Women ! Compound Women 1/4 – Van Natta Jamie (USA) – Davis Jahna (USA) For the second time in the afternoon, Davis of the USA was facing one of her teammates – Van Natta - in the 1/4 final. In a very tight match, the two archers both finished with a score of 113. In the shoot-off, Van Natta scored a perfect 10 and defeated Davis who could only shoot a 9. Compound Women 1/4 – Chan Jennifer (PHI) – Goncharova Sofia (RUS) 4thseed Goncharova was facing 5thseed Chan in another 1/4 final of the Compound Women division. They also needed a shoot-off to decide the winner of this match (109-109). After both shooting a 9 with their first arrow, it is finally the Russian with a perfect 10 who upset her opponent who, for her part, shot another 9. Dos Santos over Elzinga again ! Compound Men 1/8 – Dos Santos Roberval (BRA) – Elzinga Peter (NED) Same scenario as in Antalya in the match between Dos Santos and Elzinga! Tied 113-113 at the end of their match, it is the Brazilian who wins the right to continue here in Shanghai again after shooting a 10 in the shoot-off while Elzinga scored an 8. Compound Men 1/8 – Jimenez Jorge (ESA) – Tsui Wai Hung (HKG) Ranked 3rdafter three World Cup stages, Jimenez can still make his way to the Grand Final in Mexico next month after he qualified for the 1/4 final with an easy victory 116-109 over Tsui. The USA match goes to Jahna Davis Compound Women 1/8 – Colin Christie (USA) – Davis Jahna (USA) In a 100% American match, Davis finally took over her teammate Colin on the score of 109-106. Ranked 5thin the World Cup, Davis keeps hope to qualify for the Final to take place in Mexico. Colin, for her part, who was ranked 7thbefore this competition might have lost her last chance here! Compound Women 1/8 – Kazantseva Anna (RUS) – Hansdah Jhano (IND) Favorite archer in the Compound division, Kazantseva, has upset the Indian lady Hansdah on a tight match she won 111-109. Leading the World Cup ranking with 54 points, the Russian is looking for another excellent result here in Shanghai after her victory in Porec and 2ndplace in Antalya. Men 1/16elimination:One of theWilde brothers, Logan,already out in Shanghai ! Compound Men 1/16 – Wilde Logan (USA) – Becerra Fernando (MEX) Big upset in the Compound Men division with Mexican Becerra defeating American Logan Wilde, 8thof the World Cup ranking before this last stage in Shanghai. “I shot a good score, 113, which is as well as Cousins or my brother Reo, but my opponent simply scored the highest score on the field. That’s archery!” Logan said. Compound Men 1/16 – Cousins Dave (USA) – Dondokov Vladamir (RUS) 2ndseed Cousins was also given a hard time in his 1/16 elimination by Dondokov: the two archers were tied 113-113 after their 12-arrow match. Tied again in the first shoot-off with a 9, it finally took Cousins to shoot a perfect 10 with his second arrow to win the match over his Russian opponent who scored a final 9. Women 1/16 elimination: Almendra Ochoa eliminated Compound Women 1/16 Almendra Ochoa (MEX) - Heliarti Lilies (INA) In the first elimination round Ochoa was defeated 109 to 106 by her Indonesian opponent. Almendra said: "I shot a 6 at my last arrow. I was rushed by the time because I was waiting the wind to calm down." This early exit jeopardized the chance of Ochoa to shoot before her fans at the World Cup Final in Mexico. Compound Women 1/16 – Van Natta Jamie (USA) – Lan Lan (CHN) 3rdin the World Cup ranking, Van Natta did not have to force her talent to continue to the next round here. Facing local archer Lan, she finished the match with a 15 points lead (114-99)! Compound Women 1/16 – Simpson Nichola (GBR) – Alexandrova Nonna (RUS) 16thand 17thseeds proved they were very close again tying their match with 11 points. They then needed two shoot-off arrows to decide the winner: they both started with a perfect 10, but Simpson - with another 10 - put pressure on her opponent who could not stand it any longer and shot a 9 to leave victory to the British archer. Men 1/2 final:Di Buo and Park go to Mexico. Jang will play the final Saturday in Shanghai ! Recurve Men 1/2 -Di Buo (ITA) – Jang Yong Ho (KOR) Di Buo was stopped here today, but we will see him again in Mexico ! He could not keep up the paceagainst Jang : 27-29, 53-57, 79-87, 108-114 pts. Recurve Men 1/2 -Park Kyung Mo (KOR) – Yong Fujun (CHN)
Park shot an extraordinary 119 pts ! Too much for the local favorite Yong, 110 pts. Petersson (SUE), Talukdar (IND), Di Buo and Park Kyung Mo are going to the World Cup Final in Mexico. Women 1/2final:Park Sung-Hyung out, the others Koreans arein the semis! Recurve Women 1/2 -Yun Ok Hee (KOR) – Wu Hui Ju (TPE) The surprising Wu could not hold it until the end. She went down 58-52 at half-match and 115-105 pts at final. Recurve Women 1/2 -Lee Tuk Young (KOR) – Yun Mi Jin (KOR) This Korean dual went to Yun Mi Jin, She could preserve her lead of 57 – 53 all the way to the end : 114 – 110 pts. However, this is Lee Tuk Young (photo) who has the pleasure to qualify for the World Cup Final. Qian Jainling (CHN), Lee Tuk Young (KOR), Yun Ok Hee (KOR) are sure to go to the World Cup Final in Mexico. Tonetta (ITA) is tied for 4th place in the World Cup with Zhang Juan Juan (CHN). The Italian will go through thanks to a higher seed in the general World Ranking. Women 1/4final:Park Sung-Hyung out, the others Koreans arein the semis! Recurve Women 1/4 -Park Sung-Hyun (KOR) – Wu Hui Ju (TPE) Wu created a big surprise. She forced the Olympic Champion Park into a shoot-off, which she won 10-8. The score was tight all along the match: 27-28, 56-55, 83-83, 110-110. Recurve Women 1/4 -Yun OK Hee (KOR) – Mospinek (POL) The Korean turned to be too strong for Mospinek (photo), especially in the 4th end :29-28, 57-56, 86-84, 115-108 pts. The two other Koreans, Lee Tuk Youngand Yun Mi Jin also won : respectively against Prahba (IND) – 109-102 pts,and Zhang Nina (CHN), 112-106. Men 1/4 final: Di Buo, Park - in, Galiazzo - out ! Recurve Men 1/4 -Di Buo (ITA) – Wu (CHN)
Di Buo keeps going. He was always ahead in his match, winning 28-24, 55-52, 83-80 and finally 110-108. Recurve Men 1/4 -Galiazzo (ITA)– Jang (KOR) Galiazzo gave it all, came back during the match but lost for one point at the end : 27-29, 54-58, 82-84, 110-111 pts. The World Cup future of Galiazzo is now uncertain.
Park Kyung Mo (KOR) - 112-108 pts- and Yong Fujun (CHN) - shoot-off 10 to 8 - will meet in the other quarter-final. Men and Women 1/8 final : Di Buo "Show"
Recurve Men 1/8 -Di Buo (ITA) – Petersson (SWE)
The Italian imposed his World Cup leader status over the European Champion. Di Buo (ITA) scored a nice 114 pts (twice 57), Petersson could only achieve 110 pts (54–56).
Recurve Men 1/8 -Galiazzo (ITA) – Saidiyev (KAZ) Galiazzomay beon the way of a great come back ! He moved on with a victory 113–100 pts. Recurve Men 1/8 -Frangilli (CHN) – Yong (CHN) The 3rd Italian in the race to the World Cup Final was stopped in Shanghai. Only 1 point difference (112-113) meant a hard elimination. Recurve Women 1/8 -Williamson (GBR) - Yun OK Hee (KOR) This was a head-to-head match with two pretenders for a spot in the World Cup Final. The Korean kept her chance alive pulling out progressively 56-53 pts after 6 arrows, 112–105 pts at the end.
Recurve Women 1/8 -Mospinek (POL) – Bard (TUR) The Polish may create a small surprise in the ranking. She is still on the race, wining 112-107 pts. She will now face Yun Ok Hee (KOR). Men and Women 2nd round : Talukdar (IND), Van Alten (NED), Lee (KOR)-out !
Recurve Men 2nd round -Talukdar (IND) – Di Buo (ITA) Thetwo archers at top of the World Cup ranking met already in the men's 2ndround and the leader prevailed. Di Buo won 117–112 after leading 57–54. Talukdar can only pray his 38 ptsin the World Cup ranking will qualify. Di Buo will now meet number 3 at the World Cup ranking and fresh European Champion, Petersson (SUE). Recurve Men 2nd round -Lee Chang Hwan (KOR) – Xue Hai Feng (CHN) In World Cup final contention, the Chinese needed to beat the number 1 seed in the tournament. He did ! He was trailing 57 – 55 and could only pass through at the very last arrow, scoring a 10. Final score : 111–110 for Xue Hai Feng ! Recurve Men 2nd round -Park Kyung Mo (KOR) – Van Alten (NED) Van Alten could nothing against Park Kyung Mo : 57–50 then 116-104 pts. Recurve Women 2nd round -Park Sung-Hyun (KOR) – Lionetti (ITA) Lionetti gave it all but it wasn’t enough versus the current Olympic Champion: 57–54, then 113–107 pts. Recurve Women 2nd round -Yun Ok Hee (KOR) –Nasaridze (TUR) No miracle for Nasaridze, down to Yun 112–91 (56–48 after 6 arrows). Galiazzo (ITA), Talukdar (IND), Van Alten (NED) -through!
Recurve Men 1st round - Galiazzo (ITA)– Custers (NED)
The Olympic Champion started with a tight match vs another pretender,Pieter Custers, 110–109 pts. Recurve Men 1st round -Talukdar (IND) – Magana (MEX) The young Indian star didn’t shake in first round match vs another hopeful. Talukdar prevailed 113–105 pts (56–52 after 6 arrows). Recurve Men 1st round -Van Alten (NED) – Wills (GBR) The Dutch survived the first round at the second arrow of the shoot-off, scoring a 10 vs. a 9 for Wills. He will now face Park Kyung Mo (KOR). Tonetta (ITA), Galinovskaya (RUS), Keskin (TUR)eliminated in the 1st round !
Recurve Women 1st round - Tonetta (ITA) - Cekada (SLO)
After a tight match 102–102, Tonetta 2nd in the World Cup ranking is eliminated in the first round, 9-7 at the 2nd arrow shoot-off. Cekada (SLO) is a tough opponent, having won the World Field Championships in Göteborg recently. Tonetta now can only pray that her 33 pts in the World Cup ranking will be enough to qualify to the final in Mexico. Recurve Women 1st round -Galinovskaya (RUS)- Kim(PRK)
The World Cup winner in Porec,Galinovskaya (RUS) (photo) falls against a new comer. The Russian could never confirm her victory at the first World Cup stage and will not go to Mexico. Recurve Women 1st round -Keskin (TUR) – Ap Sut Txi (IRI) After her 3rdplace in the San Salvador World Cup, Keskin was in position to reach the World Cup Final. Not any more, as she lost in the first round 105-106. Recurve Women 1st round -Nasaridze (TUR) - Abtin (IRI) Number 33 in Shanghai, Nasaridze is still alive, winning 107 – 94 (52 -44 after 6 arrows). She will face now number 1 Yun Ok Hee.
