Shanghai World Cup 2013: Quotes from official practice

Recurve Men

Jake KAMINSKI (USA)

On how London 2012 changed his life:

It has made getting support, outside of the archery world, much easier. I don’t live at the US training centre anymore, so I can find sponsors and train fulltime which is essential.

On if an Olympic medal has changed him as a person:
No, I am still the same, maybe a little more confident!

On if a medal was everything he thought it would be:

It was probably more than I thought, a million times more! It has opened doors and made my choice of life style justifiable.

Gael PREVOST (FRA)

On his goals for 2013:

I want to be at the World Cup Final and do well at the World Championships. I do not set places I want to reach. I just aim at doing my best.

On arriving in Shanghai:

I love it, Shanghai always has nice weather. It is great and always enjoyable to shoot here.

On his bow weight:
I shoot 47lbs, I have never tried more. I want to try, but at this moment this weight is correct for me. We will see in the future.

On the best part of his 2012 season:
The World Cup Final was my best performance. I learned a lot at the Games and worked even harder in the time before the Final. It helped that I felt there was less pressure on me.

Rick VAN DER VEN (NED)

On his hopes for the 2013 season:

Every year I improve, so I want this year to be the same. My plan last year was to make the top 8 at World Cups and Olympics, so to finish 4th at the Games was great. Reaching the World Cup Final this year is my mental goal.

On selecting his bow weight:

After this year European Indoor Championships I put my bow up 4lbs to 49lbs. I just put the weight up until it feels correct. AlsoI check I can shoot a full FITA round and still feel good.

Coach YUN (PRK)

On having a full recurve team at a World Cup for the first time:
We are just here for the first time, we hope to learn from this and build. Some archers have been to the Olympic Games but for many it is there first international event. We hope to continue to travel and do more World Cups in the future.

Recurve Women

Aida ROMAN (MEX)

On if 2012 has changed her life:

YES! A lot! My life now is watched upon, like a rock star. I must take care as I am a role model for people. I have to be careful with what I do. Some things are good though: normally getting a passport takes many hours, I got mine in less than 30 minutes! I also get to meet many important people, which is great.

On if this attention is a distraction:
Yes, there are many distractions, in many places. You have to take control or you would loose your mind. You can only control yourself, not others.

Karina WINTER (GER)

On her 2012 season:

It was a good year but such a disappointment to not make the Olympics. It was very sad. I am going to try for 2016 though and do what I need to do.

On her goals for 2013:
I want to get back to last years level and more. The World Cup Final is still the plan. Last year I missed out on going to Tokyo because of just one match that I lost. Being so close has made me want it more and more.

On what motivates her each day:
It is what I want to do, not what I have to do. I really love the competitions, especially World Cups. I love everything about them, the people, the shooting, the matches, the winning, just everything.

Men Compound

Adam RAVENSCROFT (GBR)

On being at his first World Cup:

It is good, a bit scary too. The competition is defiantly “up a notch” here. I am hoping for gold obviously!

Matt RYAN (AUS)

On the difference between shooting international 3D field archery and the Shanghai World Cup:

This is much more formal, it is intense competition. The game changes as soon as the wind gets up. 3D shooting is about judging distance, get that correct and it is sorted. Distance judging is just as important as shooting, if not even more so.

On getting his first Australian national team tracksuit:

I felt pretty proud when it turned up in the mail. I have been watching World Cup events on YouTube for a while so it is good to finally be here.

Peter ELZINGA (NED)

On his goal for 2013:

I am going to shoot as many events as possible, World Cups, World Championships, World Games, World Cup Final, and to get as many podiums as possible. The world championships and World Cup Final are always special though.

Compound Women

Kristina BERGER (GER)

On how she plans to follow her successful 2012 season:

Don’t get worse! I just want to keep my level. I want the podium but I don’t say it, as it is bad for the head. I just try and hit the 10; that is all.

On what she has learned from 2012, her first season:

There is always something that can go wrong, so I just try to keep that possibility small but you are never safe.

Ashley WALLACE (CAN)

On her plan for 2013:

To do my best of course! I have been working hard on my form after my injury. I am nearly back to 100% but there are still a few kinks. I had tendentious in both my hands, from my work. I have now changed my role at work and things are well again.
