Big scores: best of indoors 2013/14

To mark the end of indoors, we’ve selected the best bits of the 2013/14 season – from the first Indoor World Cup stage in Marrakesh to Nimes 2014 and the indoor worlds. Click on the links below after 8am GMT on publishing day (in brackets) to view!

Best scores (Wednesday 19 March)
Best matches (Thursday 20 March)
Best moments (Friday 21 March)
Best archers (Saturday 22 March)

5) Three compound men shot 598 on the circuit this year. Mike SCHLOESSER kicked it off in Singapore – and after betting with Reo WILDE that someone would shoot more than 597 for the ranking round at Nimes 2014, Braden GELLENTHIEN and his USA teammate Jesse BROADWATER equalled SCHLOESSER’s season-best mark.

It’s only been three years since Christopher PERKINS, who was SCHLOESSER’s predecessor as outdoor world champion, raised the world record to 599. How long will it be until someone hits a perfect 600?

4) Yet more evidence of the increasing level of international archers was the recurve junior men’s cut for the world indoors. In Nimes, you needed 573 points to make the top-32 and get into the head-to-head eliminations.

For comparison, that’s 16 points more than at Rzeszow 2009 and 42 more than Aalborg 2005 – where there were 32 competitors in the division in total.

3) There’s nothing prettier than a scorecard full of 10s. At Nimes, team USA’s compound men filled one of theirs with 24. GELLENTHIEN, BROADWATER and WILDE shot a completely-clean match against Sweden in the semifinal.

It put the trio into a world-title-defence match against Denmark, which they won.

2) All eyes were on KIM Yu Mi during her last dozen at the third stage of the indoor world cup in Telford. She was on course to break the world record, with a ridiculous second-half effort.

It wasn’t to be, though. Her last arrow was a nine, and she drew Berengere SCHUH’s 592 – which has stood for five years.

1) One big record did fall this year, though. After “flirting with it since the age of 17”, Erika JONES wrestled the ranking round world best away from USA teammate Christie COLIN. She shot an impressive 595 at Nimes 2014. It beat the previous world record by two points, upping a mark that was set in the same year that Wikipedia launched, 2001!

She signed the target and gave it to a volunteer…
