Paralympic champ FORSBERG among Nottwil Euro Championships finalists

Finnish archer FORSBERG joined the 700 club – hitting the 72-arrow score on the dot – to win compound men’s open qualification earlier in the week.

While FORSBERG and Slovenia’s PAVLIK contest the European compound open title, reigning World Champion John STUBBS (GBR) is left with a shot at bronze. Pre-event home favourite in the division, Martin IMBODEN, was eliminated in the third round.

Two individual compound world records were beaten earlier in the week.

Czech athlete David DRAHONINSKY, who won gold at the Beijing 2008 Paralympics and silver in London, set a new compound/recurve men’s W1 world record of 670 during qualification. It beat the old mark by two points.

Great Britain’s Jo FRITH upped the women's W1 world best previously held by teammate Chloe BALL by 22. BALL beat it herself, but was 10 points behind top-seed FRITH in the Nottwil rankings.

DRAHONINSKY and reigning compound women’s open world champ Burcu DAG (TUR) will shoot for bonze in their respective divisions.

Since the implementation of new para sport classifications for archery on 1 April this year, there have been changes in team line-ups. But timeless athletes like Great Britain’s John CAVANAGH remain, and remain shooting at a high level.

He will face Jean Pierre ANTONIOUS, the Finn who won the men’s W1 world title at the end of 2013, for gold in Nottwil. He is also paired with women’s London 2012 winner Mel CLARKE in the mixed team bronze match.

In a repeat of the Bangkok 2013 world semifinals, the British pair led to start the match. Turkey, again, sprang a comeback – jumping two points ahead as the 16-arrow match ended.

Tomorrow’s compound finals day at Nottwil 2014 starts with team matches in the morning, before individual bronze and gold matches in the afternoon. All matches are being broadcast live, free and online, courtesy of Archery TV.
