Brady ELLISON tops Wroclaw qualification: “I’m sick of being beaten”

“I’ve kind of sucked all year, and I’m sick of being beaten,” said Brady ELLISON at the end of his qualification round in Wroclaw. “I’m in a must-win situation to make the World Cup Final this year, so I had to shoot good here.”

Scoring 345 out of 360 points, Brady ELLISON had built a commanding nine-point lead over USA teammate Jake KAMINISKI by the halfway point in qualification. ELLISON shot a field-leading 340 for the second 36 arrows, securing a 685 total and the top seed.

“I was shooting good scores with the equipment I was using before – but I’ve made some changes and now we’re getting along better,” the two-time World Cup Final winner explained.

Brady sits in 10th in the 2014 Archery World Cup rankings heading into this fourth stage. He made the last eight in both Shanghai and Medellin, before being knocked out in the third round at Antalya.

“I’ve had a couple of top eights this year, but it’s not on the podium.”

Just before travelling to Wroclaw, Brady beat Canada’s Crispin DUENAS in the final of the Pan-American Olympic Festival in Mexico. He shot 687 in qualification there, then won the USA nationals just a week later.

“Brady’s a strong shooter,” said Crispin, who was featured in a WorldArchery.org head-to-head comparison with the American last week. “I’m sure he’s really happy with his shooting right now.”

DUENAS seeded third over qualification here in Wroclaw – so will meet Brady in the gold medal match if he clears eliminations.

“First thing is first: I’ve got to get out there and shoot well,” the grounded Canadian said. “If I shoot how I did today then I could very well see Brady in the final. That would be quite spectacular!”

Crispin also needs a strong finish to be in with a chance at securing a spot at Lausanne 2014. He lies in 13th in the rankings.

“If I can really pull out a tournament and podium here – and then make the Final – it would be big for me,” Brady confirmed. The multi-discipline archer also said he was looking forward to the world fields in Zagreb, as a shoot he “really wanted to win”.

But that’s not unusual for the 25-year-old: “I hate losing so much that every tournament I go to I want to win.”

“Even though this year you’re not building for a world championships or an Olympics, you’re always trying to improve.”

“At least, I am.”

Shanghai 2014 silver medallist Pierre PLIHON (FRA) collected the second seed and KAMINSKI finished in fourth. Indian athletes Jayanta TALUKDAR and Tarundeep RAI, Russia’s Bair TSYBEKDORZHIEV and Italian Mauro NESPOLI complete the list of recurve men receiving third-round byes in Wroclaw.
