Ten matches that mattered: Wroclaw 2014 individual eliminations

The compound men and women and recurve men’s qualifiers for this year’s Archery World Cup Final are locked. There’s just one spot in the recurve women’s top seven – who make up the Final eight, along with a host nation representative – that might change.

As early as the third round of individual eliminations at Wroclaw, matches were deciding whether athletes would receive a Lausanne invitation…

1) DELOCHE (FRA) v BACAK (TUR), compound men third round: DELOCHE said earlier in the week that if he finished this year with a number eight World Cup ranking, it would be the story of his season.

Beating BACAK sprang DELOCHE into a points finish, and pushed him up the rankings – into the top seven.

2) DUENAS (CAN) v VALLADONT (FRA), recurve men fourth round: Frenchman Jean-Charles VALLADONT shot 29-29-28 to beat Crispin DUENAS in straight sets, putting the Canadian out of Lausanne contention.

3) DAMSBO (DEN) v SCHLOESSER (NED), compound men fourth round: DAMSBO – who had only five points heading into Wroclaw – beat SCHLOESSER, and put him out of Finals contention.

4) OCHOA (MEX) v VAN CASPEL (NED), compound women fourth round: Linda OCHOA’s win propelled her into a Finals qualification place, and pushed VAN CASPEL – and CHOI Bomin, Korea’s Shanghai winner – out.

5) JAGER (DEN) v ROCHMAWATI (INA), recurve women quarterfinal: World Champ JAGER lost, 2-6, leaving her 11th in the World Cup rankings. Not enough for the Final.

6) DALMEIDA (BRA) v KAMINSKI (USA), recurve men quarterfinal: Brazil’s Marcus DALMEIDA made his first individual finals by beating Jake – he’ll shoot for Wroclaw bronze – and ensured the States archer wouldn’t make the World Cup rankings top seven.

7) ELLISON (USA) v GU (CHN), recurve men fourth round: Brady ELLISON won – and qualified for his fifth World Cup Final.

8) VALLADONT (FRA) v VAN DER VEN (NED), recurve men semifinal: VALLADONT would have needed to win Wroclaw to grab a Lausanne spot. Olympic bronze finalist Rick VAN DER VEN put a stop to that.

9) DAMSBO (DEN) v DELOCHE (FRA), compound men semifinal: Reigning World Cup Final Champion Martin DAMSBO, like VALLADONT, needed Wroclaw gold to qualify for Lausanne. He lost 148-145 to an already-qualified DELOCHE in the semis.

There’s one match that matters for Lausanne still to come…

10) SEGINA (RUS) v KUMARI (IND), recurve women bronze medal match: Win and in for SEGINA.
