Nanjing 2014: individual eliminations morning in pictures

All first-round individual elimination matches are shot in the archery arena at the Youth Olympic Games – over one full day of competition.

It’s a tough difference with the normal tournament schedule, since athletes turn up to venue to practice and shoot just that single match. There’s also a bunch more pressure, with spectators, live commentary, cameras and video.

Here are five things we saw this morning in Nanjing…

1) A single shoot-off: Mete GAZOZ had a rough third set and let Bulgaria’s Damyan DACHEV recover and draw the match. The Turkish 12 seed, who said shooting a first-round match in a finals arena was “a little bit more exciting than normal” shot a better nine in the one-arrow decider… close!

2) LEE Woo Seok of Korea dropped one arrow out of the 10-ring in his three-set win.

3) Argentine archer Francisco RODRIGUEZ SAS pulled out the only real upset of the morning (although both 17 seeds lost to the 16-ranked athletes) when he beat an opponent that qualified seven places higher than him.

4) One and done: Benin’s Merveille Kpetchehoue ZINSOU lost 6-0 in her first round match, to the top qualifier from Korea.

5) Jan VAN TONGEREN won his first round match 6-2. The Dutch fourth seed, more importantly, wears this awesome, slightly retro safari hat when shooting. Like the style.
