Mexico, host of the 2015 World Cup Final, collects Lausanne mixed team title

Next year’s World Cup Final will take place in Mexico City. One of the reasons why the Central American country was selected to host the event is the number of Mexican archers that have been shooting well in recent years.

The pride of that successful Mexican archery team: Olympic silver medallist Aida ROMAN, who was joined by Luis Eduardo VELEZ for the Lausanne 2014 Archery World Cup mixed team final.

In Wroclaw the pair shot together.

They won stage gold, beating Russia in a tiebreaker shoot-off after the teams drew when the regulation four sets had been shot. ROMAN also took mixed team silver in Shanghai, with Juan Rene SERRANO.

Not only was it a first finals appearance in the mixed team event for host country Switzerland, but a first senior finals for archers Iliana DEINEKO and Florian FABER. Although Florian did come seventh at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games – where all the matches are shot in an arena.

Mexico won in straight sets – as expected, while the Swiss pair gained valuable experience.

VELEZ – who isn’t shooting in the individual competition at Lausanne – was just proud to represent Mexico at the World Cup Final: “the feeling you get when you listen to that anthem is great.”

“To compete by Aida’s side is fantastic, and it’s just an honour to represent your country – especially here in Lausanne.”

His mixed teammate Aida is in the individual competition and got through to this afternoon’s semifinals, where she will face top-ranked XU Jing of China, who was also a silver medallist at London – in the team competition.

She’ll have Luis Eduardo’s support: “I want to hear that anthem again,” he said, smiling.
