Sari’s lucky day leads Bangkok qualification

Rona Siska Sari, of Indonesia, scored 694 out of a possible 720 points for the 72-arrow 50-metre ranking round to top compound women’s qualification at the first stage of the 2017 Asia Cup in Bangkok, Thailand. The four closest archers all came in six points behind, on 688.

“It’s a good score for me. I had a lucky day,” said Sari, who said her total was a personal best and that her normal rounds come in and around the 670 and 680 marks. “I didn’t believe it. I can do it!”

Her previous best for qualification at an international event was 679.

Sari was part of Indonesia’s bronze medal winning compound women’s team at the Hyundai Archery World Cup stage in Antlaya in 2016 and was ranked number 73 in the world arriving in Bangkok. With the event acting as the final continental qualifier for the World Games in Poland later in the year, it was a good time for Sari to post her best ever start to an international tournament.

The four archers with 688 were Malaysia’s Salleh Fatin Nurfatehah Mat and Saritha Cham Nong, Chinese Taipei’s Wu Ting-Ting, and Aung Ngeain from Myanmar.

Iranian reigning Asian Games Champion Esmaeil Ebadi topped the compound men’s ranking list in Bangkok with 704 points, three ahead of Mohd Juwaidi Mazuki of Malaysia on 701. Russian archer Alexander Dambaev, a double World Archery Championships medallist in 2013, came in third with 699.

The first leg of the 2017 Asia Cup takes place 20-25 March in Bangkok, Thailand.
