Brits beat top-seeded compound women; recurves into bronze final

The top-seeded compound women’s team at the fourth stage of the Hyundai Archery World Cup, Mexico, lost to Great Britain in the quarterfinals, and then the Brits dispatched fourth-ranked Denmark to secure a gold medal match berth in Berlin.

Lucy O’Sullivan, Lucy Mason and Hope Greenwood were ranked ninth after qualification.

“We didn’t really realise we were in the top four, just saw all the teams leaving the field. In the finals I think we’ll just do the same we did today, not think about it and try to get the best we can out of it,” said O’Sullivan.

“We’re just happy to be here. As they say in Britain, is the taking part [laughs]. We had a really good laugh, we just enjoyed ourselves all day and it’s been awesome to shoot together. It’s all about having fun and enjoying what you do.”

The British recurve women, who survived a shoot-off with Italy in their first match, will shoot for Berlin bronze.

Naomi Folkard, Bryony Pitman and Sarah Bettles took down the number two seeds, India, in the quarterfinals – and shot a 57-point set to take an early lead over Mexico in the semis. The Mexican trio took the second and third sets by a point – and then the two teams split the last – giving Mexico the victory, 5-3.

Mexico shoots against Korea for gold; Britain and Russia for bronze.

The fourth stage of the 2017 Hyundai Archery World Cup runs 8 to 13 August in Berlin, Germany.
