The two former world champions each dropped a single point over the ranking round.

World number one Stephan Hansen and number three Mike Schloesser both scored 599 out of a possible 600 points to lead the compound men’s ranking round at the first stage of the 2017/18 Indoor Archery World Cup in Marrakesh, Morocco.

Hansen and Schloesser are the only two archers to have shot perfect, 600-point indoor qualifying rounds to date.

“I don’t think the competition is getting much stronger between [Mike and me] because the competition between us has been strong for a long time,” said Denmark’s Hansen.

Mike dropped his single point in the fourth end, Stephan in 10th.

At halfway, the USA’s Braden Gellenthien was tied with the pair on 299 – but while the two leaders kept a clean sheet over the back 30 arrows, Braden dropped three more points to finish on 596 and in third.

Paige Pearce-Gore topped compound women’s qualifying with 592 points, Max Mandia led the recurve men on 593 and Gabriela Bayardo the recurve women with 586.

Bayardo, who shot for Mexico at the last Olympics, has moved to the Netherlands. She has been absent from the international outdoor scene since Shanghai, likely while she serves the time required to change national teams.

(The Indoor Archery World Cup is not factored into this rule.)

“I feel pretty good shooting right now,” said Bayardo. “I’ve been practising a lot in a different way; it’s more about myself and more about my shooting.”

“I don’t have any pressure. I’m really happy with my shooting and with this score.”

The first stage of the 2017/18 Indoor Archery World Cup takes place in Marrakesh, Morocco on 10-12 November 2017.
