Hernandez shoots 714 qualification, beats Salinas to Copa Merengue title

El Salvador’s Roberto Hernandez beat Nelson Salinas of Argentina to the compound men’s gold medal at the Copa Merengue world ranking event in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on 8 April 2018 after scoring an international career-best 714/720 points for his ranking round.

“I’m happy to be back here because it was here that I won my first World Cup medal back in 2009, a bronze in the team event,” said Roberto.

“Nelson, my opponent from Argentina, shot very well in the earlier mixed team matches so I had to keep focused not to loosen up in my shot.”

Hernandez’s win was El Salvador’s lone podium finish of the tournament, with hosts Dominican Republic leading the table (combined senior and junior) with 17 medals in total.

Twenty-seven-year-old Carlina Guzman won the home country a gold in the compound women’s competition, her first medal finish at a world ranking tournament.

Chilean Olympian Ricardo Soto took the recurve men’s event, beating local archer Daniel Martinez in their final. (Martinez shot a national record of 654 out of a possible 720 points for qualification.)

Florencia Leithold of Argentina took the recurve women’s gold medal.

Team medals went to Chile, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, and Trinidad and Tobago.

The 2018 Copa Merengue world ranking event took place on 2 to 8 April in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
