Dutch women Sanne de Laat, Jody Vermeulen and Martine Couwenberg beat Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Madhumita Kumari and Muskan Kirar from India by two points, 223-221, to take bronze at the opening stage of the 2018 Hyundai Archery World Cup circuit in Shanghai, China.
“We felt pretty good. We got a medal and got to be on stage. That’s what we are here for,” said Sanne.
One point down, 58-57, after the first six arrows, the Dutch trio found themselves with a two-point lead after the third end, 167-165, which they held through the last six arrows to win the match, 223 points to India’s 221.
Neither team took advantage of wayward arrows creeping in during the middle stretch.
“When you don’t aim in the middle, [arrows] don’t land in the middle,” said Vermeulen. “It went well pretty much overall.”
Seeded 11th with 2042 out of a possible 2160 points in qualification, the Netherlands beat World Archery Champion Colombia with a perfect 30-point shoot-off in the eliminations, only losing to Chinese Taipei by two, 230-228, in the semifinals.
Russia claimed compound women’s gold with a four-point win over Chinese Taipei.
The first stage of the Hyundai Archery World Cup takes place in Shanghai, China on 23-29 April.
