Canadian Team: Archery Paralympic Trials for Beijing

The 2008 Federation of Canadian Archers (FCA) team trials took place from 31 May to 2 June 2008 at Woodlands Park in Toronto, in conjunction with one of Archery’s premiere events, the Ontario Spring Classic. Beijing will mark the largest Paralympic Archery team for Canada ever with three team members competing.

Lyne Tremblay has qualified in the ARW2 Recurve Women division and Norbert Murphy has qualified in the ARW1 Men Compound division. Although these two positions on the team to Beijing had already been filled there was still one spot to fill. The trials determined the one man who will represent Canada at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing individual AR Open Compound Men event. That archer will be Kevin Evans.

Kevin Evans obtained Canada’s spot at the World IPC in Korea last September by capturing the gold medal and the title of World Champion in the AR Open Compound Men division. He shot against fellow teammates Bob Hudson and Robert Cox. The competition was so close that trials points were tied right down to the final three arrows! In the process, Kevin Evans shot an unofficial IPC world record for the round with a score of 118. The tournament was comprised of three different events, all shot at the Paralympic distance of 70 metres. First, the archers shot a preliminary round of 72 arrows on Saturday morning (31 May) earning points for both placing and score. Once ranking was completed the competitors shot the first half of a round robin competition on Saturday afternoon. The round robin consists of head to head matches of 12 arrows. The winner of each match earned trials points. The double elimination round for the Ontario Spring Classic was held on Sunday (1 June) with four trials points available to the highest scoring trials competitors. On Monday morning (2 June) the men completed the round robin competition and shot a final double elimination match in the afternoon. Canada’s Archery Team Coach to the Paralympics is Susan Lemke.
