Wroclaw (POL) to be Host City of The World Games 2017

In its meeting on Wednesday the IWGA Executive Committee had noted that Cape Town (RSA) had withdrawn its bid for financial reasons, and had made a final assessment of the Bids from Wroclaw (POL) and Budapest (HUN) and before opting to award the 10th edition of The World Games to Wroclaw. The agreement with the next host city will be signed in Quebec, Canada, on 21 May 2012 in the context of the IWGA Annual General Meeting. The 9th edition of The World Games will be staged next year in Cali, Colombia. Giving reasons for the decision in favour of Wroclaw, President Ron FROEHLICH mentioned the excellent bid presented by the host city. "We are happy to present our sports in Wroclaw in the summer of 2017, and we are sure that we will be offered optimal conditions for our sportsmen and women there. All the bids we received were of very high quality, and it was not easy for us to reach a decision." The multi-sport event showcases 30-plus sports and is the pinnacle of the year for 4,400 athletes (including the invitational sports) from over 90 countries. Wroclaw offers all prerequisites to stage an event like The World Games. This does not only refer to the required sporting venues and infrastructure. The city also has a record as a host of big sports events and can count on the support of the city administration, the government and the National Olympic Committee. So, after Duisburg 2005, The World Games will return to Europe. In 2009 Kaohsiung (Chinese Taipei) was the host of the multi-sport event. In 2013 it will take place in Cali, Columbia, and that is for the first time in a country in South America. "In the new millennium The World Games have taken a tremendously positive development. We are sure that with Wroclaw as a host we will continue along this successful path," stated FROEHLICH as he announced the decision. The bidding process had been started by the IWGA in early 2011.
