Athlete of the Week: Ibrahim SABRY (EGY)

The 18-year-old Ibrahim SABRY came on the international scene by winning the Youth Olympic Games individual gold medal in Singapore 2010. His progress over the last year makes him one of the favourite archers to qualify for the London Olympic Games. Coming from a country where archery is not a very popular sport, Ibrahim SABRY was the surprise winner of the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. A feat even more remarkable considering that the young Egyptian archer did not drink or eat from dawn until dusk (including during training and competition), as the event was held during the holy month of Ramadan. In 2011, SABRY competed in his first World Archery Championships in Turin in July, and won two medals at the Arab Games in December (a bronze in the senior individual competition and team silver). After competing in the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games, SABRY’s next target is to represent his country at the senior Olympics. He is one of the favourites for the upcoming African Championships / Continental Qualifying Tournament (11-16 March 2012 in Rabat, Morocco) for the London Olympic Games this summer. The 18-year-old has the experience of that type of event already, having won the gold medal at the African Continental Youth Olympic Games qualifier in 2010.
