Athletes of the Week: Aida ROMAN & Mariana AVITIA (MEX)

M. AVITIA, A. ROMAN, A. VALENCIA, 3rd at Shanghai 2012 World Cup The young Mexican Olympians Mariana AVITIA and Aida ROMAN won the silver and bronze, respectively, at the Arizona Cup last weekend, a World Ranking Event. The two Mexican archers climbed the podium at the 2012 AAE Arizona Cup. Aida ROMAN lost the semifinals to Miranda LEEK (USA), but went on to win the bronze medal final 6-4 against another American, Mackenzie BROWN. As for Mariana AVITIA, she edged out Mackenzie BROWN in the semifinals, but was defeated in the gold medal final by Miranda LEEK (USA) 6-0.
Both archers have been on the Mexican team at most of the major archery events since 2008. The most notable occasion was the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. There, Mariana AVITIA became famous for being the youngest athlete of the entire Mexican delegation at age 14. She made her way through to quarterfinals and placed 8th overall, while Aida ROMAN competed all the way to the 1/8 elimination round and finished in 13th place. Mexico has not yet qualified any athlete for the London 2012 Games. They will have the opportunity to do so at the Continental Qualifying Tournament in Medellin, Colombia in April or at the World Cup Stage 3 in Ogden, USA in June.
