KWAK and GELLENTHIEN on top the whole day

KWAK and GELLENTHIEN on top the whole day Antalya – 4 June 2009   The World Cup Stage 3 in Antalya (TUR) continued with the qualification rounds in the recurve women and compound men categories shooting a FITA Round. KWAK Ye-Ji (KOR) and Braden GELLENTHIEN (USA) increased their lead throughout the day. The American finished with a very good 1407 points to top the men’s field.   The long distances were shot in the morning and the short distances in the afternoon.   Individual - Recurve Women Unsurprisingly, the three Koreans were on top of the women ranking this morning. KWAK (photo) had 683 points. She was 1st at 70 meters with 339 and 2nd at 60 meters with 344 to build a good lead over her opponents. The Olympic bronze medallist YUN Ok-Hee shot 675 points (3rd at 70m with 334 and 4th at 60m with 341). JOO Hyun-Jung had 667 (she was only 9th at 60m with 335). Natalia VALEEVA (ITA) had a difficult start (11th at 70m with 322 points) but she was the best at 60m with 344 points. OUYANG Ruyu (CHN) had the reverse fortune (2nd at 70m and 12th at 60m). Both were tied at a provisional 4th place on 666 points. Two French archers, Berengere SCHUH and Sophie DODEMONT, followed. The 2008 World Cup Final winner, Justyna MOSPINEK (POL) was 9th.   KWAK was 1st again at the 50m distance with 342 points. It was pretty much status quo among the top archers. The only changes: Natalya ERDYNIYEVA (RUS) moved up to 5th; and Victorya KOVAL (UKR) to 8th.   KWAK finished the day with 1381 points with an impressive lead over YUN who scored 1362 points. JOO, the third Korean, was not far behind YUN on 1358. VALEEVA had a superb 357 points at 30m to take the advantage over OUYANG for fourth place. The Italian finished with 1349 points and the Chinese with 1340. ERDYNIYEVA finished 6th with 1336 just one point ahead of SCHUH. KOVAL was 8th with 1328, MOSPINEK 9th with 1321 and the rest of the pack followed.   Individual – Compound Women GELLENTHIEN (photo) and Patrizio HOFER (SUI) were separated by only one point after the long distance, which are 90 and 70 meters for the men. GELLENTHIEN was the best at 90m with 345 points and 2nd at 70m with 349 for a total of 694. HOFER had 344 and 349 for 693. Sergio PAGNI (ITA) was a bit behind on 688 points (343 at 90m and “only” 345 at 70m). Then there was a good pack of pursuers between 684 and 682 points. In order of the ranking there were Martin DAMSDO (DEN), Kevin TATARYN (CAN), Patrick COGHLAN (AUS), Duncan BUSBY (GBR), Jorge JIMENEZ (ESA), Peter ELZINGA (NED) and Dejan SITAR (SLO). It’s worth noting that the bronze medallist in Porec, Paul TITSCHER (GER) had a disappointing 41st place at 90m (329 points) but came back strongly with the best score at 70m, 350 points! He was at a provisional 14th place overall.   HOFER had some troubles at 50m and only ranked 28th on this distance with 345 points. He lost his third place to PAGNI. COGHLAN moved up to 4th place and BUSBY to 5th. Morten BOE (NOR) surged to 7th with the best score on the distance, 355 points.   Both GELLENTHIEN and PAGNI broke the 1400 barrier today! The American shot 1407 and the Italian 1401. HOFER finished 3rdwith 1398, COGHLAN 4th with 1396, BUSBY 5th with 1395. SITAR had a good performance today with 1393, BOE shot 1392. The new world record holder with a score of 1419, ELZINGA, was not as stellar today with 1391, tied with KEVIN TATARYN (CAN). JIMENEZ had 1390 and Sébastien BRASSEUR 1389. Other notables include the world champion Dietmar TRILLUS (CAN) at 13th, TITSCHER at 15th and Roberval DOS SANTOS (BRA) at 16th.   Team - Recurve Women Korea had a very comfortable lead after the long distances with 2025 points after which it was a close race between France, Italy and China. The French had 1952 points, three more than the Italians and five more than the Chinese. Japan and Russia were slightly further behind.   Korea finished the day on 4101 points, heads and shoulders ahead of the others. Italy emerged in the 2nd place with 3964 ahead of China on 3951. Japan ended 4th with 3941 and France dropped from 2nd to 5th with 3931.   Team - Compound Men Three teams were within three points of each other at the half-way mark! Italy had 2035; Netherlands 2034 and Denmark 2032! Sweden was not far behind with 2028 and New Zealand was tied with Germany on 2023 points.   Italy held on to its 1st place to finish with 4152 points. France improved from 8th to 2nd place with 4145. Netherlands had 4141 at 3rd place and Germany finally had the better of New Zealand, 4130 to 4129. Denmark went the opposite way to France, falling to 8th place.
