Back on the field!

Back on the field! Antalya – 7 June 2009   The athletes were back on the field on Sunday morning for the individual quarterfinals and semifinals as well as the mixed team event (photo). The winners will meet on the final field on Sunday afternoon.   There was a tricky, gusty wind on the field this morning.   Recurve Men The big clash of the quarterfinals was the match of Simon TERRY (GBR) vs OH Jin Hyek (KOR). The Korean had the best start and took the lead 28-27, 55-54. However, OH was tricked by the wind in the third end with a 8-7 before he tried to recover with a 10. TERRY shot slightly better with 9-X10-8 and reversed the situation to lead 81-80. The silver fox let experience speak for itself in the last end. TERRY shot 9-10-10 and although OH had 9-9-X10, the Brit won 110-108! The other clash was between the Porec winner, Jayanta TALUKDAR (IND) and the Olympic bronze medallist in Beijing, Bair BADENOV (RUS). TALUKDAR started the match really well with two ends of 29 (9-10-10 and 10-9-10). BADENOV did not miss the gold either but did not find the centre as often as the Indian (9-10-9 and 9-9-9). TALUKAR led 58-55. The third end was tricky as well for them and the Russian made up one point-8-8-9 vs 8-9-7, score 82-80 to the Indian. He did not let up in the fourth with a 8-10-9 that gave him the victory 109-105. In the other quarterfinals, Thomas AUBERT (FRA) had a nice win over KIM Sky (AUS), 55-52, 108-104 and Amedeo TONELLI (ITA) had an easy victory over KAPIL (IND) 108-102.   The clash of the semi-final was then TALUKDAR vs TERRY. The Brit had the best start (28-27) and continued with 29 points in the second end to reach 57. On the other hand, TALUKDAR had many problems in the second end with 24 points (total 51). TERRY once again did not let go and won 112-107. AUBERT also took the lead over TONELLI after six arrows, 54-51. The Frenchman then controlled the match and prevailed 80-78, 109-106. He will make his return to a final field two years after his bronze medal in Varese (ITA)!   Recurve Women Seven of the top eight seeds were in the quarterfinals. Rimil BURIULY was the only exception and she could not raise her level to the occasion this time, losing 100-104 to Ruyu OUYANG (CHN). The No. 1 seed KWAK Ye-Ji did not seem affected by the wind and won 112-103 over Victorya KOVAL (UKR). The second Korean JOO Hyun-Jung dominated Natalya ERDYNIYEVA (RUS) 80-77, 109-104. The third Korean, YUN Ok-Hee had more difficulties against Berengere SCHUH (FRA). The French lady was leading 80-78 but YUN tied it in the last end at 106-106. It was a war of nerves in the shoot-off as both archers took a long time to shoot. Finally YUN prevailed 8-7.   KWAK really stuck with the great form she has shown during the week. Although she had some trouble in the first end (9-8-7) she continued with 10-X10-X10, 9-9-X10 and 9-9-10, way to good for OUYANG in this match and KWAK won 110-101. The Korean duel in the second semi-final was tight at the beginning. JOO had 9-10-8 and YUN had 9-X10-9 for 28-27. Then YUN made the difference with 10-10-9 and took a 3-point lead 57-54. She continued with 9-9-9 and 9-10-10 to clinch a place in the final 113-108.   Compound Men It seemed the wind did not have the same effect on Braden GELLENTHIEN (USA) and Peter ELZINGA (NED). The American only dropped one point in the second end to score 119 in his match! The Dutchman was fooled in the third end like many others (26) and lost the match 110-119. Sebastien BRASSEUR (FRA) was also close to perfect with an end of 30-30-29-29 for 118 points, too good for Martin DAMSBO (DEN) who achieved 115. Dominique GENET (FRA) also had a strong start with 59 points. He dropped some points later on but it was still good enough to clinch victory 113-111 over Stephen CLIFTON (NZL). The other New Zealander, Shaun TEASDALE, did not have more luck versus Patrick COGHLAN (AUS). The Australian prevailed 87-85, 115-114.   GELLENTHIEN continued his superb form with another 119-point match! Too good for COGHLAN who had 115 despite making a perfect 60 in the second half. The French duel was tight in the other semifinal. GENET had the best start and led 29-28. He continued with 10-9-10 and BRASSEUR had 9-10-10. They again traded 29-point ends in the third and GENET still had a 1-point lead, 87-86. GENET concluded with another 29 and BRASSEUR could not catch him. Victory for GENET 116-114.   Compound Women Ivana BUDEN (CRO) had a perfect start against world champion Eugenia SALVI (ITA). The Croatian led 60-54 and although she dropped some points later on she won 113-108. Luzmary GUEDEZ (VEN) was even better. She also had a perfect 60 and led by two points at the half. GUEDEZ concluded the match 116-113 over the recent Porec winner Nicky HUNT (GBR). The winner of the team competition yesterday, Linda LAINCHBURRY (NZL) did not make it back to the final field. The match was tight after six arrows and she trailed Camilla SOEMOD (DEN), 56-57. However LAINCHBURRY lost her hopes in the third end with 23 points. SOEMOD took the lead 84-79 and won the match 114-106. Olga BOSCH (VEN) and Anastasia ANASTASIO (ITA) had a very tight match: 56-54, 82-82 and 110-110. In the shoot-off the Venezuelan prevailed 9-8.   SOEMOD had the best start in her semifinal against GUEDEZ, 28-25. The Dane gave upa bit of her lead in the second and third ends, 53-52, 80-79. Finally GUEDEZ reversed the situation in the last end and won 107-106! BUDEN had the best start against BOSCH, 27-26. However the other Venezuelan turned it around and led 55-54, 83-81 and clinched the match 110-108. It will be an all-Venezuelan final this afternoon!!   Mixed Team In the recurve semifinals, Korea faced India and China played against Russia. The teams have one man and one woman each. Each archer shoots two arrows per end for four ends. Korea and India traded ends of 37 and 34 to reach the halfway mark tied at 71-71. Then Korea had another 34 but India could not keep it up as Reena KUMARI shot a 3 with only one second left on the clock. Korea took the advantage 141-130. In the other semifinal between China and Russia, the latter first held the lead: 36-34, 72-69. However the uncle and niece, Baljinima TSYREMPILOV and Natalya ERDYNYEVA had a bad third end (8-8-6-8). CHENG Wenyuan and OUYANG Ruyu took the advantage 105-102 and won 140-138.   In the bronze medal match, Russia had the best start against India, 35-33 and 71-70. TSYREMPILOV-ERDYNYEVA did not let anything go this time with X10-10-9-9 and 8-10-X10-10 to get the highest recurve score of the morning and beat India 147-140.   The final for gold took place on the final field at the Baki’s beach in Antalya on a beautiful Sunday afternoon!   China took a 2-point lead at the start with a good 36. Although Korea then turned on the heat with 9-10-9-10 and 9-9-9-9 they only managed to close the gap to one point. Then IM Dong Hyung and YUN OK-Hee, who had not best form today, finished the match with 10-8-8-10 for 144 points. CHEN and OUYANG were solid during the whole match. They scored 9-10-9-9 in the last end and earned themselves a prestigious victory over Korea, 146-144.   Our special consultant for the finals Crispin DUENAS (CAN) said “Mixed teams is another great idea by FITA. Men are maybe a bit more powerful but the women are often times more accurate. So it a legitimate idea to put them together and it showcases all the aspects of our beautiful sport. It is also good to take the top women and the top men archer of one country. It shows the top level of a country. Moreover some country cannot produce three men or women to put a regular team together, but the mixed team give them a chance!”   In compound, Australia took on the USA and Great Britain met Italy. COGHLAN, helped by Fiona HYDE, enjoyed revenge over GELLENTHIEN who was shooting with Jamie VAN NATTA. Australia led 39-37, 75-74, 114-110 and won it 150-147. In the other semifinal, the teams were tied at 38-38 and 75-75 before Sergio PAGNI and SALVI pulled out two ends of 38. They took the lead 115-112 and clinched it 153-147.   The bronze medal match was of a high level! Great Britain took the lead 38-37 and 77-75 but the USA tied it at 114-114. Then Duncan BUSBY and Nicky HUNT had 10-9-10-10 while the USA had 10-10-9-9. One of VAN NATTA’s 9, a mere millimetre outside the 10 and that was the difference. Great Britain clinched the bronze 153-152!   The compound final was on the beach as well and PAGNI-SALVI had the best start with 37 points compared to 34 for COGHLAN and HYDE. However, the Australian managed to turn the situation over during the second end, 71-70. Italy got the advantage back shooting a 38 in the third end to lead 108-107 although Australia had a liner 10. Finally PAGNI and SALVI shot another 38 (10-8-10-X10) to clinch the gold, 146-142.   Didier MIEVILLE FITA Communication
