  Compound Men In the compound men's event, the No. 9 seed Tim WATTS (CAN) defeated THE No. 7 Christopher HERFINDAL (SWE), 38-35, in semifinal. The second match was between the No. 11 and No. 12 seeds, Herwig HAUNSCHMID (AUT) and Martin SPRING (SUI). After a tie at 43-43, the two archers scored 11 points each in the shoot-off, however the local representative was victorious.   Shooting at home proved an advantage for HAUNSCHMID, who won the gold medal 41-39 against WATTS. The bronze in this category went to HERFINDAL, who defeated SPRING, 43-42.   Compound Women Seeded No. 4 after qualification, Lucy HOLDERNESS (GBR) offered her country the first ever 3D World Championships medal when she won gold in the compound women's tournament in Austria. The British lady won both her matches on the final day of competition to secure the world title. First up she defeated the top seed Lisa SODERSTERM (SWE), 41-38. In the gold final, despite the support of local people to her opponent Petra GOEBEL (AUT/3), HOLDERNESS kept her nerves and beat the home favourite, 42-40.   In her semifinal, GOEBEL had previously defeated Irene FANCHINI (ITA/5), 41-39. The Italian went on to win the bronze medal, after a win over SODERSTERM, 43-38.   Barebow Men The first semifinal in barebow men was an all-Spanish match between the No. 9 seed Sebastian JUANOLA CODINA and No. 5 David GARCIA FERNANDEZ. The match ended up in a tie at 40-40, however the lowest seeded archer made the difference in the shoot-off, 10-8. JUANOLA CODINA then shot for gold against Bobby LARSSON (SWE/2) and lost the final match 37-39.   Before winning this match, the Swede had previously defeated Ferruccio BERTI (ITA/8), 40-39, in a tight semifinal. The Italian could not do better than 4th, losing again in the bronze medal match, 39-42 to GARCIA FERNANDEZ.   Barebow Women In barebow women, among the top-seeded archers only the No. 3 Martina MACKOVA (CZE) missed the semifinal round. The No. 1 and 2 faced each other for an easy win by the top archer Andrea RAIGEL (AUT), 37-32 over Chantal PORTE (FRA). The second semifinal was between Lina BJORKLUND (SWE/4) and Andreja IZGORSEK (SLO/5). The Swede proved to be in better form and earned a ticket to the gold final, 37-34.   BJORKLUND, however, then scored 36 only in the final match to let the world title go to the home favourite RAIGEL who finished with 39. The Frenchwoman PORTE won bronze, 31-30 over IZGORSEK.   Instinctive Men The lowest seeded among the four semi-finalists, Peter GARRET (CAN/14) first kicked out the No. 2 seed Peter NAHOCZKI (HUN), 37-31, before winning the gold medal, 26-21 over the top-seeded Alexander PARSCHISEK (AUT).   The Austrian, however, managed to win another medal for his country, beating Antonio HERNANDO SANCHEZ (ESP/6) in the bronze medal match, 33-29.   Instinctive Women The first semifinal in the instinctive women's category was an all-Austrian match between the best two seeded competitors, Christa OCENASEK (1) and Petra Andrea WALTENSPIEL (2). After a tight contest, OCENASEK proved the best with a victory 28-26.   The No. 8 seed Francesca CAPRETTA (ITA) defeated the No. 6 Mireille TOUSSAINT (BEL), 34-29 in the second semifinal. However, and despite shooting the same score of 34 again in the gold final, she had to admit defeat against OCENASEK who scored 35. The bronze medal went to the second Austrian WALTENSPIEL who took over TOUSSAINT 32-27.   Longbow Men Paolo BUCCI (ITA/6) won his final two matches to win the longbow men's world title. In the semifinal, he scored 34 to defeat Julio AMAT (ESP/10) just by one point. Shooting against fellow countryman Enzo LAZZARONI (ITA/13) in the gold final, he had to improve his performance to achieve victory 36-35.   The bronze medal was won by the Spanish representative. AMAT ran over Christophe LE DOZE (FRA/9), who after shooting 20 points only in semifinal, conceded defeat by 23-32.   Longbow Women The No. 1 seeded competitor Encarna GARRIDO LAZARO from Spain made her way through the semifinal round thanks to a victory 28-26 over Katrin VIRULA (EST/5). In the gold final, she faced the local archer Petra KRAUS (AUT/14) who previously easily defeated Giulia BARBARO (ITA/8), 29-21.   The gold final match was tense, but GARRIDO LAZARO had the final word by 23-21 over KRAUS. The final for bronze was a one-way match with a victory by VIRUL, 28-18 over BARBARO.   Team Events In the men's team competition, the No. 1 locals missed the medal, losing against the Swedes in semifinal and against the Italian in the bronze medal match. France took the world title after victories over Italy and Sweden.   The French supremacy in the team events was total with another win by their female representatives who defeated Sweden and then Spain. The Austrian team took bronze this time thanks to a win over Sweden.   World Archery Communication
