SUNG: double junior world champion, twice!

All the categories shot their bronze and gold finals in the Legnica City Park Stadium. Juniors shoot in the afternoon at the same distances as the senior level. Compound athletes shot cumulative score matches of 15 arrows at 50 metres. Recurve junior athletes shot matches with 5 sets of 3 arrows at 70 metres. There are two points to win per set (one point each in the case of a tied set). The first archer who has six set points wins the match.   Here is our recap of our live commentaries of the juniors finals.   Recurve Junior Men   Gold – Ryan TYACK (AUS/12) v SUNG Wookyeong (KOR/2) In the Korean team, SUNG Wookyeong was the junior team and individual champion from 2009. He also won the 2011 team title yesterday!   TYACK is the 2006 individual cadet world champion and the 2008 junior team world champion.   The Australian started the match well with 9-9-10, while the Korean was not perfect with 10-8-9. First set and 2-0 for TYACK.   Both archers shot an identical second set: 9-10-9. TYACK led 3-1 in set points.   SUNG found his rhythm in the third set with another 10-9-9, while TYACK was not so consistent anymore (8-8-9). SUNG came back to tie at 3-3.   SUNG turned it up a notch in the fourth set: 10-10-10! With 10-8-9 TYACK could only concede this set and the lead, 3-5.   In the last set, TYACK started with a 10! SUNG scored a 9. The Australian had a 9. The Korean got a 10. Tied set provisionally. TYACK scored a last 10! SUNG needed to equal it to win the match. Anything less and the match would go to a one-arrow only shoot-off, closest to centre, where anything could happen. What suspense! SUNG drew his bow and scored THE 10. He tied the set (10-9-10 to 9-10-10) to win the match 6-4! SUNG became the double individual and team world champion from Ogden 2009 AND Legnica 2011!   Bronze – LIU Yue (CHN/40) v Rick VAN DER VEN (NED/3) VAN DER VEN was silver medallist in Ogden two years ago and seeded No. 3 here. LIU, who was only 40th in qualifications, had a great run in the matches.   VAN DER VEN has regularly competed at the senior level this year but it was not his day today. LIU was solid to take a straight-set victory, 27-25, 28-27, 28-27! 6-0 and bronze medal for the Chinese athlete!   Recurve Junior Women   Gold – KIM Minjung (KOR/1) v Deepika KUMARI (IND/3) KUMARI is the current cadet world champion and although she could still shoot as a cadet, she competed here in juniors. She is also the individual and team Commonwealth Champion at the senior level!   The No. 1 seed KIM had already won two gold medals yesterday and was looking for a complete sweep. She took the first set, but KUMARI took the second, 2-2.   KIM shot a 9 and 10 and… a 3 in the third set! The door was opened for KUMARI who scored 7-9-9 to lead 4-2.   In the fourth set KIM could not do better than 9-9-8. KUMARI was sovereign with 10-9-10 to win the match 6-2. Another title for Deepika KUMARI from India! Jai Ho!   Bronze – LEE Jinyeong (KOR/4) v LIN Shih-Chia (TPE/18) The No. 4 seed LEE from Korea shot against the No. 18 LIN from Chinese Taipei. The Korean athlete started really well with 29 points to take the first set. However LIN scored a 28 in the second set to tie the match at 2-2.   LEE was just slightly stronger in the third and fourth set. She won them 28-27 and 29-28. Bronze medal for LEE, 6-2!   Compound Junior Men   Gold – Christos AERIKOS (GRE/5) v Colann SCHREUDERS (NED/7) Another Dutchman shot for gold; SCHREUDERS, against the surprising Greek AERIKOS.   AERIKOS started with 9-10-10, while SCHREUDERS scored a perfect 30. AERIKOS dropped a couple of more points in the second end, while SCHREUDERS kept it perfect at 60.   AERIKOS scored 10-10 and a 9 in the third end and made up one point over SCHREUDERS who had 9-10-9. The Dutchman still led 88-86.   The Greek kept trying hard and finally got a perfect end 10-10-10 in the fourth. SCHREUDERS had 9-10-10 and his lead was cut to only one point!   AERIKOS started the last end with a 9. SCHREUDERS scored a 9. The Greek athlete had another 9. The Dutchman found a 10! AERIKOS finished with a 10. SCHREUDERS needed a 9 to win. He shot a 9 just on the line! SCHREUDERS world champion, 145-144!   Bronze – Mike SCHLOESSER (NED/1) v Jesse GALE (AUS/7) SCHLOESSER was the No. 1 seed in all the categories after the qualifications. He won the gold in mixed teams and the silver in teams after a crazy match yesterday. He could now complete his collection with a bronze. GALE was nevertheless not to be taken as an easy opponent.   The archers were tied at 28-28, then at 57-57. SCHLOESSER, who usually looks so calm, seemed a bit nervous and scored a triple 9 in the third end. GALE caught a 10 and two 9s to take the first lead 85-84.   The scored was quickly tied again as SCHLOESSER opened the fourth end with a 10 and GALE a 9. The next arrows were a 9 for the Dutchman and a 10 for GALE. They both finished the fourth end with 10; GALE still led 114-113.   SCHLOESSER tried to put pressure when it opened the last set with a 10. However GALE scored another 10. SCHLOESSER finished with 9 and 10. GALE had 10-10 and could raise his arms in a sign of relief and pure joy! Bronze medal for the Australian Jesse GALE 144-142!   Compound Junior   Gold – Inge VAN CASPEL (NED/1) v Kendal NICELY (USA/2) No. 1 against No. 2. The mixed team gold medallist against the silver medallist. The 2009 junior world champion against the 2008 champion! VAN CASPEL against archrival NICELY.   The American had a perfect 10-10-10 and 10-10-9 start to build a 2-point lead 59-57. VAN CASPEL tried to come back starting the third end with 10-10. However she finished it with an 8. NICELY kept cruising with another 10-10-10 to take a comfortable lead 89-85.   The question was now if NICELY could beat the world record of 147 points for this category. She led 118-113 after 12 arrows and therefore needed to be perfect in her last end. She started with a 10, then another one “on the line”. She was a bit shaky with the release of her last arrow, but she caught a last 10. World record and gold medal, 148-140!!   Bronze – Ekaterina KOROBEYNIKOVA (RUS/5) v Naomi MARTENS (BEL/11) KOROBEYNIKOVA – MARTENS opened the Sunday afternoon session, the last of these championships with a great match! They were tied at 28-28. Then KOROBEYNIKOVA took the lead 56-55.   Thanks to a 10-10-10 in the third end, MARTENS came back at 85-85. She scored another 10-10-10 to take lead 115-113 before the last three arrows!   MARTENS was unstoppable in the second part of this match. She finished with another 10-10-10 to take the bronze medal 145-141. KOROBEYNIKOVA won two individual silver medals at the last two youth championships, but she will need to settle for her team silver from yesterday this time.   The World Archery Youth Championships Legnica 2011 are now over.
