European Championships Start Today
Lausanne - 13 September 2006
The Outdoor Target Archery European Championships start in Athens today. All the best European archers came back to the place of the 2004 Olympics and hope for some more glory.
These 2006 Europeans take place in one of the former Olympic sites and once again, we will see some spectacular competition with a challenging wind. After the qualification today, teams and individuals will shoot in match-plays until the new Champions are crown on Saturday. Here are some of the favorites.
Recurve Men:
The Italian golden trio Frangilli, Galiazzo and Di Buo will face competition from Hirstov (BUL), Van Alten and Peter Custers (NED), Tsyrempilov (RUS), Petersson (SWE) and Ivashko (UKR).
Recurve Women:
The succession of Marcinkiewicz (POL) is wide open between Olympic bronze medalist Williamson (GBR), Field silver medalist Dodemont (FRA), Tonetta (ITA), Mospinek (POL), Galinovskaya (RUS), Gallardo (ESP), Nasaridze (TUR) and Berezhna (UKR).
Compound Men:
The Dutch World Record team Emiel Custers, Elzinga, Van Zutphen will be challenged by Damsbo and Baldur (DEN), Genet (FRA), Boe (DEN), Hofer (SUI) and freshly Field World Champion Lundin (SWE)
Compound Women:
Behind the two favorites and World Cup leaders from Russia, Goncharova and Kazantseva, the competition will be tough between current European Champion Fabre (FRA), Willems (BEL), Soemod (DEN), Simpson (GBR), Ericsson (SWE) and the young Ioannou (GRE) and Zorman (CRO).
