CHEN celebrates home victory!

Here are our live commentaries of the individual finals.   Recurve Men   Gold Medal – OH Jin-Hyek (KOR) vs CHEN Wenyuan (CHN) OH must absolutely win to go to the World Cup Final in Copenhagen. If he loses the 2004 Olympic Champion Marco GALIAZZO (ITA) will stay 4th in the ranking. CHEN was an early talent, ranking 2nd at the 2004 European Grand Prix in Whyl (GER) when he was only 16.   CHEN had a great start with 9-X10-10, while OH had 9-9-8.   Then OH put pressure with a 10. CHEN answered with a 10. OH had an 8 and shook his head in despair. CHEN scored a 9. OH scored a 9 and CHEN earned another 10 to build a great lead 58-53!   OH was shooting too much on the left. He adjusted to scored a X10-10, but also an 8 low on the target. CHEN started to get a bit nervous but he managed 8-9-9 and still led by 3-points, 84-81.   Then both archers traded 9s. OH had another 9 but CHEN had a 10. OH finished with a 10 for 109 points. CHEN concluded with a 10 and clinched gold at home, 113-109!   Today we had the top archer Crispin DUENAS (CAN) joining us for the commentary. He gave us his opinions on the matches, “The Crispin Corner”: OH was a little tentative. He usually shoots quickly but in this match he was slower than usual. CHEN kept his cool under the pressure of the home crowd and clinched the match with six 10s. He missed the yellow only once and had a well-deserved victory!   Bronze Medal – CHENG Chu Sian (MAS) vs IM Dong-Hyun (KOR) The 23 year-old IM is an amazing talent. He is the double team Olympic gold medallist in 2004 and 2008, the 2007 individual and team world champion, the 2008 world cup final winner, among a long list of other titles in such a young career!   CHENG is also only 23 and has also been competing at a high level for many years! He has already had some success, including a 2nd place at the Olympic Test Event Beijing 2007.   IM started with a dead centre X10, an 8 and a 9 for 27 points, while CHENG had 8-10-7 for 25 points.   Then both archers traded a 25 and IM led 52-50.   Then CHENG brought up the heat with 9-X10-X10 to tie the match at 79-79!   Then IM had 10. CHENG had X10. IM had X10. CHENG had 9. IM scored 10 and clinched the match! CHENG had a last 10 that did not change the outcome. IM had the bronze 109-108.   Crispin’s Corner: Both guys were really strong. They shot really well under pressure and IM won-again!   Recurve women   Gold Medal – YUN Ok-Hee (KOR) vs Berengere SCHUH (FRA) YUN is one of the most successful archers since 2006, when she actually won the Shanghai stage! She won two World Cup stages (Porec and Antalya) and two Olympic medals in Beijing last year. SCHUH has also had a successful career, including an indoor individual world championships title in 2003 and a team bronze at the last Olympic Games.   Tied score after the first end: 8-9-X10 for YUN and 8-10-9 for SCHUH.   However the Korean turned it up in the second end with 9-10-10! The French competitor had 8-9-9 and trailed 53-56.   Then SCHUH had an 8. YUN waited before preparing her shot. When she wanted to go, a strong gust of wind came up and she fell into time trouble. With two seconds left, she shot a 6. SCHUH took advantage of it with a quick 10, but YUN was quick to react, too: another 10! Then both archers traded 9s and the Korean had still a 1-point lead, 81-80.   SCHUH was consistent in the last end with 9-9-9 but YUN finished even better with 10-9-9 and clinched victory 109-107.   YUN joined PAGNI as the most winning archer in the World Cup: four victories!   Crispin’s corner: Both archers looked consistent as they always do. YUN was clearly caught by the wind when she shot a 6, but she had enough skill to recover and keep on top of the match.   Bronze Medal – ZHAO Ling (CHN) vs KWAK Ye-JI (KOR) ZHAO won the Porec stage and KWAK was victorious at the last stage in Antalya.   KWAK had the best start with 8-X10-9 and 8-9-9 for 53 points.   ZHAO dropped a 6 with her sixth arrow and had only 50 points.   The wind was still strong but KWAK showed what the Koreans are made of and kept shooting strongly. She had 7-10-9 to lead 79-75.   The Chinese put a lot of pressure at the end with 10-10 while the Korean had 9-8. She now only held a 1-point margin. However, ZHAO finished with a 7, while KWAK had 8. Bronze medal for the Korean 104-102.   Crispin’s corner: Tough match for both archers. ZHAO showed some nervousness with a 6 and a 7. KWAK was maybe not as consistent as usual but she still managed to come out on top. You need to know how to win in challenging conditions.   Compound Men   Gold Medal – Jorge JIMENEZ (ESA) vs Sergio PAGNI (ITA) This was the revenge match of the final at the Porec World Cup where PAGNI won. JIMENEZ was 2nd in Shanghai in 2006 and won two stages and the World Cup Final in 2007. Both are assured to go to the Copenhagen Final.   These are two of the very best archer in the world in the last few years. They had both a bit of shy start however. JIMENEZ had 9-8-9, while PAGNI scored 8-9-10 to lead, 27-26.   They raised their level in the second end while the rain was decreasing. The Salvadorian had 10-9-10, while the Italian shot 9-X10-9. Score was tied at 55-55.   JIMENEZ shot a triple 9 in the third end, while PAGNI shot X10-9-10. He took the lead back, 84-82.   JIMENEZ put the pressure in the last end. He started with a 10. PAGNI had a 10. Then, the Salvadorian had another 10, so did the Italian. JIMENEZ finished with a 10, but PAGNI had the same answer: a 10. Victory 114-112.   PAGNI has now won four of the last eight World Cup stages in 2007 and 2008! He was only 4th in the Lausanne World Cup Final last year. He will have a second chance, like JIMENEZ, at the World Cup Final in Copenhagen in a little more than month.   Crispin’s corner: The conditions were still challenging and it was a game of who could hold it together. PAGNI shot 59 points in the last six arrows and truly deserved to win.   Bronze Medal – Vladimir FEDOSOV (RUS) vs Patrizio HOFER (SUI) HOFER was a grand finalist in Lausanne last year and he will go to Copenhagen, while FEDOSOV is a talented newcomer.   HOFER brought up the heat with 10-10-10 and 10-10-9 in the first two ends.   FEDOSOV was not as clean. He had 9-9-10 and 9-9-9 to trail, 55-59.   The Russian did not do better at the beginning of the third end with two 8s and finally got an X10 after that. HOFER kept being solid with 9-9-10 to lead 86-81.   HOFER concluded with 10-9-10 to clinch the bronze 115-108.   Crispin’s corner: FEDOSOV looked tense on the field. It was his first appearance in a final. HOFER showed his experience; he has now shot in many special fields of play for finals.   Compound Women   Gold Medal – ANASTASIO Anastasia (ITA) vs Camilla SOEMOD (DEN) A big stake! The winner of this match will go to the Copenhagen Final, while the loser will simply stay home. The ranking is so tight at the top of the compound women. SOEMOD was 3rd at the last World Cup in Antalya. ANASTASIO was Junior World Champion in Izmir in 2007.   The rain started to come down harder at the beginning of the match.   ANASTASIO started with 10-9-9, while SOEMOD had 9-9-9.   SOEMOD brought up the heat with 10-X10-10 in the second, while ANASTASIO had 10-8-10, the Dane took the lead, 57-56.   It got more even more complicated in the third end. ANASTASIO had X10-7-8 and was a bit astonished by her last two arrows. SOEMOD was also a bit surprised to get 9-8-9, but she led 83-81.   The Italian finished with 9-9-10 but that was not enough. The Dane had 9-9-9 to clinch the gold and a final berth at a home World Cup Final in Copenhagen on 26 September, 110-109! She joins Nicky HUNT, Ivana BUDEN and LUZMARY GUEDEZ! The last two have the same World Cup points as Olga BOSCH (VEN), but they will have a better FITA World Ranking after the Shanghai World Cup.   Crispin’s corner: It is never a good sign to have shots that surprise you, because it means you don’t know exactly what happened. ANASTASIO had two shots like this in a row and that was the difference in this match. Hats off to both archers for shooting in this rain.   Bronze Medal – Linda OCHOA (MEX) vs Albina LOGINOVA (RUS) OCHOA was 2nd in Shanghai in 2006, while LOGINOVA was silver medallist at the world championships in 2007. The Russian beat the Mexican in this morning at the team final.   The wind dropped a bit this morning, but a fairly hard rain welcomed the archers for the individual finals this afternoon. Both archers shot a bit too much on the right this time and also a bit low for LOGINOVA. She trailed 28-29.   Both archers then shot exactly X10-9-10 in the second end. OCHOA led 58-57.   The wind picked up in the third end and LOGINOVA had to fight really hard with the wind to clinch a 10 with her 7th arrow. She continued with 9 and 10 in this end, while OCHOA had 10-10-9. Still a 1-point game, 87-86.   LOGINOVA finished with 10-9-10. OCHOA seemed to clinch it with a strong group and two 10s exactly on the same spot, but the Mexican concluded the match with an 8! The score was tied at 115-115! Shoot-off!   OCHOA shot another 10 first in the same exact spot, but LOGINOVA scored an X10. Shoot-off continued!   OCHOA then scored a 9, and LOGINOVA had another 10 to clinch the bronze! What a match to start the individual finals!   Today we had the top archer Crispin DUENAS (CAN) joining us for the commentary. He gave us his opinions on the matches, “The Crispin Corner”: Given the weather conditions, this is great shooting from both archers!  LOGINOVA kept believing in herself and she won at the end.   Didier MIEVILLE / Crispin DUENAS FITA Communication
