Gellenthien sets new qualifying world best with 718

Subject to ratification, Braden’s compound men’s ranking round at the USA national outdoor championships will stand as a new world record. The reported score of 718 out of a possible 720 points beat the previous world-best mark by one.

That score, of 717, was shot by Mike “Mister Perfect” Schloesser at the opening stage of the 2016 Hyundai Archery World Cup in Shanghai, China.

If it is ratified, Gellenthien’s 718 puts the pinnacle of the compound men’s performance at two points off a perfect round.

“I’ve overcome a lot over the last few months in terms of form changes and mental hang-ups,” he said. “I’ve reverted back to a lot of things that I’ve done in the past, and been successful with, and I’ve also made leaps in terms of my mental preparation.”

Braden said the score felt like a “rebirth of sorts” and that he was “excited for what the future holds”.

Gellenthien was Hyundai Archery World Cup Champion in 2012, in Tokyo, and has an incredible 16 individual podiums over his World Cup career, which began in 2007. He was also World Archery Indoor Champion in 2007 and runner up at the outdoor World Archery Championships that same year.

“I’m finally in a comfortable place with who I am as a competitor, archer and person,” he concluded.
