6 places awarded at Asian qualifier for World Games

The Asia Cup stage in Bangkok, Thailand acted as the Asian continental and final qualification tournament for the 2017 World Games in Wroclaw, Poland – awarding three men’s and three women’s places in the compound archery competition to top finishers.

Iran booked places for both genders after Esmaeil Ebadi and Parisa Baratchi each took individual gold medals in Bangkok.

Mazuki Mohd Juwaidi and Khambeswaran Mohanaraja finished second and fourth in the compound men’s competition, behind Ebadi, which was enough to claim the other two available men’s invitations at the competition for Malaysia.

(The archer that finished third, Alexander Dambaev, represented Russia – which is a member of World Archery Europe and therefore could not qualify a place in Asia.)

Philippines archer Amaya Amparo Cojuangco’s second place and Chinese Taipei’s Chen Yi-Hsuan’s third secured the women’s tickets.

The qualified places are awarded to the national member association of the athletes that won them. It is the national federation’s decision whether to accept the place, which is done via World Archery, and subsequently who to send to compete at the World Games if that place is accepted. Member associations have until 31 March to accept places.

The archery competitions at the World Games, which includes both field archery and compound target archery disciplines, will take place on 23-30 July in Wroclaw, Poland.

Vietnam’s Loc Thi Dao and Deng Yu-Cheng, from Chinese Taipei, won golds in the recurve women’s and recurve men’s competitions as the Asia Cup stage in Bangkok. Loc Thi Dao beat Olympic team bronze medallist Lin Shih-Chia to victory in a tight shoot-off in which both archers shot 10s.

Chinese Taipei led the overall medal table, winning all four team competitions and taking four individual medals to take the squad’s count to eight in total, including five gold medals.

The first leg of the 2017 Asia Cup took place on 20-25 March in Bangkok, Thailand.
