Deepika Receives Padma Shri Award

Four-time Archery World Cup Final runner-up Deepika Kumari received a Padma Shri Award for her contributions to sports in India.

Deepika is ranked number eight in the world since her latest World Cup Final silver at Mexico City 2015, but she emerged on the scene in 2010 when, at the age of 16, she took an individual gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Dehli.

She was presented with her Padma by the President of India at a ceremony at President House, New Dehli on 28 March 2016.

The Padma Shri is the fourth highest civilian award in India. Other recipients in 2016 included artists, actors, writers, industrial leaders, civil servants, and experts in fields of medicine and the sciences.

Deepika is the second archer to receive the honour.

Limba Ram, who represented India at three Olympic Games, won the Asian Championships in 1992 and coached the national archery team during the Commonwealth Games in 2010, was awarded his Padma in 2012.
