13 september 2010 - Venezuela wins six gold medals at World Ranking Event in Chile

Venezuela wins six gold medals at World Ranking Event in Chile Santiago (CHI) – 13 september 2010 Compound men gold:Francisco ROJAS (COL) v Gabriel MARTI (ARG)     Venezuela won three individual and three team gold medals at the Bicentenario World Ranking Tournament (WRE) held in Santiago de Chile on 6-13 September 2010.    Jaileen BRAVO beat Olympian Leidys BRITO 7-3 to win the women’s recurve gold in an all-Venezuelan match. BRITO had won the FITA Round two days before with the only score over 1300 in the recurve categories: 1315. Colombian veteran Maria Victoria ECHAVARRIA came in third as she defeated Virginia CONTI (ARG).   The men’s recurve gold was taken by Elias MALAVE (VEN) in a 6-2 match versus Daniel REZENDE XAVIER (BRA). Top seeded Oscar TICAS (ESA) shot a 10 to win a shoot-off against Chile’s Mario VALDES for the bronze medal.   Two surprises occurred in the compound categories, as juniors Ana MENDOZA (VEN) and Francisco ROJAS (COL) capitalised ahead of contenders who included World Cup medallists Olga BOSCH (VEN) and Roberval DOS SANTOS (BRA). MENDOZA defeated BOSCH 6-4 for gold, while Brazilian Talita DE ARAUJO won a shoot-off versus the winner of the FITA Round (1373) Carolina MONTES (VEN). ROJAS overwhelmed Argentina’s Gabriel MARTI 6-0, while Nestor GAUTE (ARG) took the bronze. DOS SANTOS, who had shot a 1393 FITA Round, lost his 1/8 match against teammate Luciano VAZ ALVARENGA.    Venezuela won the recurve women, compound women and compound mixed team events. Chile did very well in the recurve mixed team event to defeat Ecuador, a team which had shot the best score (144) in semifinal. Brazil won the recurve men and compound men team events. The Brazilian compounds shot a wonderful 237 in the gold medal match versus Venezuela. This score is only one point shy of the world record set by the Dutch team in El Salvador in 2006.   Despite the fact that this was the first WRE ever held in Chile, the organisers put together a wonderful event.
