Colombia and Russia take compound mixed team titles

Second-seed Colombia and the top-ranked United States contested the junior compound mixed team final. Alex WIFLER and Kailey JOHNSTON dropped only two points in the first half, giving them a 78-75 lead over Colombia after eight arrows. That’s when four 10s - and a perfect 40 - from Sara LOPEZ and Camilo Andrés CARDONA (main photo) reduced the gap to one point. Three 10s and a 9 just on the line in the final end sealed Colombia’s first ever mixed team victory, 154-153.

“Sara and I are used to shooting together because we represent our region as a mixed pair at the regional level”, explained CARDONA. “We had to apply this to the world level and now that we have won: it is fantastic! I hope to shoot with her on the world scene again next year.”

The United States settle for a second consecutive silver medal in this category. Jignas CHITTIBOMMA and Jyothi Surekha VENNA won India the bronze with a 153-144 victory over Belgium.

Experienced Croatian archers Domagoj BUDEN and Maja ORLIC contested the cadet compound mixed team final with Alexandra SAVENKOVA and Anton BULAEV (photo), a Russian pair both competing in their first international event. The teams were tied 75-75 at the halfway mark, before each Russian competitor shot three 10s and one 9 - a point more each than the Croatians.

With 153-151, Russia - and SAVENKOVA - won its second medal of the day. Croatia’s scores in the final were a disappointment, as BUDEN/ORLIC did not score lower than 153 in the elimination matches.

Cecilio QUEVEDO and Fernanda SANDOVAL defeated India 149-146 to win bronze, and the third podium of the day for Mexico.
