Mexico win Wroclaw mixed team gold, beat Russia in a tiebreaker

Russia had gone 4-2 set points up on Aida ROMAN and Luis VELEZ before the Mexicans leveled the score up at the end of regulation sets. Shoot-off.

Tatiana SEGINA and Bair TSYBEKDORZHIEV had been hot and cold. Unfortunately, the cooler version shot the tiebreaker arrows, and Russia’s 7-8 15-point total was no match for a solid pair of Mexican nines.

“Our coach reminded us some specific technique things and just told us to relax before the shoot-off,” said Olympic silver medallist Aida.

Her partner, VELEZ, added: “it was an exciting match. We were up, down – that’s what archery is.”

“It’s never decided until the final arrow.”

Mexico won the recurve men’s gold medal match but lost the women’s final this morning. Still, two out of three Wroclaw recurve team golds is an impressive record.

The secret to their mixed team’s match success, the ever-smiling Aida said: “we joke with each other, to take away the nerves.”

Jayanta TALUKDAR and Deepika KUMARI blew past Belarus in the bronze medal match. The Indian pair averaged 37 points a set, racking up three set wins in quick succession before the Belarusians could register a set point.

It was both TALUKDAR’s and KUMARI’s second medals of the day, after they won silver and gold respectively with the Indian teams this morning.
