Hard-fought World Cup Final win for Mexico’s Olympic silver medallist

The Mexican archer started 2014 by winning the indoor worlds in Nimes; she finishes the outdoor season with another title: World Cup Champion.

“I'm happy to be the new champ,” said ROMAN, struggling to contain her excitement. But quickly regaining composure and perspective, she continued: “I go step by step because this is archery: one day you are on top and next day you don't know...”

Sunday afternoon on the Place de la Navigation in Ouchy-Lausanne, ROMAN beat two Chinese athletes in a row to win the Archery World Cup Final.

In the semifinals, the London 2012 silver medallist came back two times from a two-set-point deficit to eventually beat London 2012 team silver medallist XU Jing 6-4.

XU’s teammate CHENG suffered the same fate one match later: 6-4 as well, after the pair was drawn at 3-all. Aida chose that very moment to unleash her game: two sets of 9-10-10, two sets wins and World Cup Final victory.

The Mexican admitted pressure was big today. “I was a bit nervous with each arrow, I had new thoughts,” she said.

The key to success? “I tried not to think of the results, just making better with every shot,” ROMAN explained.

After the mixed team title Mexico clinched earlier today, fellow countryman and teammate Luis Eduardo VELEZ said he wanted to hear the anthem again. That’s done!

The 2014 Archery World Cup Final bronze medal went to XU. The top seeded recurve woman at Lausanne 2014 defeated Russia’s Tatiana SEGINA, 7-3.
