We’ll take our opportunity, says Dane DAMSBO

Denmark’s compound men’s and women’s teams qualified 11th and fourth respectively in Antalya.

The sub-10 seed for Stephan HANSEN, Martin DAMSBO and Patrick LAURSEN was nothing short of deceiving. The trio won gold at the first Archery World Cup stage of the year and started their Antalya campaign well.

In the first round, the Danes had the highest score on the field at 232: Six more than their Indian opponents. Top scorers again in the quarterfinals, 234 was enough to see off Italy.

Mexico fell to the Danish axe in the semifinals – but the reigning world champions, who will have a chance to defend their title on home soil in Copenhagen later this year, were beaten on score by a team in the match next door.

The USA men, who disappointed in Shanghai, dropped a 237. They needed it to beat an ever-improving Korean squad – and Denmark took note.

“The United States is always a strong team,” said Martin DAMSBO. “It’s always great to go back into a gold medal match like we did in Shanghai.”

“We’ll take our opportunity and hopefully get gold again.”

The clear top two teams throughout the elimination phases, the Danish team said they relished the chance to get back on the finals field and shoot alternate matchplay. For them, this event was all about preparing for the worlds.

They aren’t alone in the finals. Denmark’s women are back on the scene.

Buoyed by Erika ANEAR, a former Australian team member who has relocated to the nation, the women beat Italy and Germany before stumbling against Korea.

“This is the first time we’ve shot together,” explained Erika. “This is the team for Copenhagen and this was our practice run, so we’re pretty happy.”

Just two points in their semifinal match, ANEAR, Sarah Holst SONNICHSEN and Tanja JENSEN are set to compete with Russia for Antalya bronze while Colombia has the Koreans in the final.
