Italy shoots perfect 160 in mixed team matchplay

Marcella Tonioli and Federico Pagnoni scored a perfect 160 in their compound mixed team quarterfinal against Slovenia at the third stage of the Hyundai Archery World Cup in Antalya to set a new world record by a single point. It marks the first perfect score shot on the 16-arrow mixed team match in competition.

“It was hard. Slovenia shot good and we had pressure on us. He [Federico] was shaking so much on the last arrow, and me too, but we did good,” said Tonioli.

The pair scored 160 6X – the X-count being the number of arrows hitting the inner 10 ring. The new world record, though a perfect score, can be beaten if a mixed team shoots perfect with more Xs.
Federico and Tonioli said, “of course”, when asked if they’d try.

The pair had a silver medal together at the previous World Cup stage in Medellin and will shoot for bronze in Antalya. After winning the quarterfinal with the record, the Italian duo lost to Colombia in the semifinals. (Colombia were actually clean going into the last end, but dropped two arrows into the nine to close.)

“We are in the same team in Italy, so we’re comfortable shooting together. We like shooting together,” she added. Marcella and Federico both represent Polisportiva Dilettantistica Adrense Sezione Arcieri Franciacorta at home.

Colombia takes on Great Britain in the Antalya compound final, while Korea and Italy contest recurve mixed team gold.
