Peineau named World Games athlete of the month

France’s Sebastien Peineau was named the International World Games Association’s Athlete of the Month for October 2017 following his historic victory at the 2017 Hyundai World Archery Championships in Mexico City.

The 30-year-old compound archer, who spent the last offseason rehabbing an elbow injury, upset world number one and defending champion Stephan Hansen in the final.

“I am very happy to have been elected athlete of the month of October. It gives me another opportunity to talk about archery,” said Peineau.

After winning gold in October, he told reporters: “If someone had been told me before the championships that I would be in the final, I would not have believed it – and now I’m champion.”

After becoming France’s first compound men’s indoor archery world champion, Peineau has now become the first ever male French archer to hold the outdoor title – and currently holds both at the same time.

Peineau finished ninth at the 2017 World Games in Wroclaw, Poland.

Field archery has been part of the programme of the World Games since 1985, when recurve and barebow events were first included; compound was added in 1993.

The compound competition was changed to the discipline of target archery in 2013.
