Schloesser, Gellenthien, Kim tie on Antalya top ranking sore of 713

Dutchman Mike Schloesser, Kim Jongho of Korea and the USA’s Braden Gellenthien all scored 713 out of a possible 720 points to lead compound men’s qualification at the second stage of the 2018 Hyundai Archery World Cup in Antalya, Turkey.

Mike took top seed after a coin toss with Jongho, both on 65 10s and 34 Xs, with Braden slotting in as number three on 65 10s and 32 Xs.

“I’m happy with how I started. I had some bad arrows but for the rest, I think I handled the conditions good,” said Schloesser.

“The second half was a bit more tricky; I just need to pay more attention. I was lucky – good moments, good shots.”

Kim, who won in Shanghai, and Schloesser also tied to lead qualifying at the first stage of the Hyundai Archery World Cup, there with Abhishek Verma, on 709 points.

Indian archer Verma qualified in 12th in Antalya with 705.

It looked like it would be Gellenthien who would take a comfortable pole until the closing moments. Heading into the last six-arrow end of the 72-arrow 50-metre ranking round, he had a three-point lead.

“I shot my first arrow and it was an eighth of an inch out left. I overcompensated on my next arrow and it went an eighth of an inch out right, and then I made a bad shot on the third one. I ran three 10s,” said Braden.

“It was total coincidence it was the last end. I still feel super in control of my shot and I’m super excited for the matchplay.”

Austria’s Nico Wiener, PJ Deloche, Steve Anderson, Esmaeil Ebadi and reigning World Archery Champion Sebastien Peineau (707) completed the compound men’s top eight. All receive byes into the third round of eliminations.

World number one Stephan Hansen, who did not attend Shanghai, qualified in 16th with 704 points.

Gellenthien, Anderson and Kris Schaff qualified the USA first in the compound men’s team event with 2126 points; Korea seeded first in the compound mixed team competition.

The second stage of the Hyundai Archery World Cup takes place in Antalya, Turkey on 20-26 May.
