3 new nations secure Paralympic places at Asian continental qualifier

Hong Kong China, Mongolia and Sri Lanka qualified their first athletes to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games as China, Iran, Korea, Malaysia and Thailand add to their quotas at the continental qualification tournament held as part of the 2019 Asian Para Archery Championships in Bangkok, Thailand.

The event was open only to archers and teams from the continent of Asia.

China, already the nation with the most para athletes qualified for the Games after the 2019 World Archery Para Championships, added two more invitations in the compound women’s open event to bring its total quota haul to 13.

There was no qualification tournament held for the W1 women’s category, meaning the spot available was not awarded in Bangkok and will be deferred to the final world qualification tournament scheduled for spring 2020.

A total of 26 nations now own at least one of the 89 secured spaces for the next Paralympics. (Thirty-two teams competed in Rio in 2016.) Upcoming continental qualification events in Europe and the Americas will award the next 20 spots.
