Qualification procedure published for Birmingham 2021 World Games

The qualification system for the archery competitions – both target and field – at the Birmingham 2021 World Games has been approved by the International World Games Association and released by World Archery.

The document outlines the total number of quota places, how they will be allocated and deadlines in the procedure.

A total of 100 archers will compete at the next World Games: 48 recurve and barebow archers in the field events and 52 compound archers in the target competition.

The majority of the recurve and barebow quota places will be won at the 2020 World Archery Field Championships which are being held in Yankton, USA in September 2020.

Compound athletes listed in the top 10 in the world rankings as of the end of 2020 will win spots for their countries – with a further 13 quota places for each gender available through continental qualification tournaments.

The first of these will be the European Archery Championships in Antalya in May 2020.

Two places per gender for para athletes – one for a US archer as the host nation and one for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Champion – have been reserved in the compound competitions.

Archery was introduced to the World Games in 1985.

The programme consisted of field archery competitions for recurve and barebow archers until 1989. In 1993, compound was introduced.

The compound event was changed into a target archery competition in 2013 when the Games were held in Cali.

Sara Lopez and Stephan Hansen won the compound titles at the 2017 World Games in Wroclaw; Denmark took mixed team gold. Amedeo Tonelli, Lisa Unruh, Istvan Kakas and Cinzia Noziglia were the field champions.

The 2021 World Games will feature a target event for compound archers and field event for recurve and barebow archers.
